Draw Pictures without the Mess

The Crayola Light Designer responds to the touch of the included stylus to give children a mess-free and exciting way to draw--with light! Since the dome works by displaying light, drawings can be easily erased, re-created, or colored over. The dome also features preprogrammed scenes, with drawings of butterflies, flowers, spaceships, and more, which children can animate or alter.

Dome Shape Encourages Creativity

Children can also learn new ways to express their creative bent by planning their drawings in a circular, nontraditional way. The round dome format is easy to work with, since the drawing can be rotated across the surface by simply clicking and dragging the pen.

Animation and Movie Features

The fun doesn't end once kids have finished their drawings. Animation options allow kids to make their creations move. They can also create six-frame movies with the Movie Maker activity on the light dome.

Engaging Games Keep Kids Occupied

The Digital Light Designer also features games. Children can create funny faces, race cars through obstacles, discover hidden images, learn how to draw without lifting the pen, draw half an image that gets reflected, and watch their designs change color in a light show.

Large Stylus is Easy to Operate

The large stylus that puts light on the dome is a convenient size for young hands to maneuver. It works by either pressing the stylus against the dome or holding it up to one inch away while pressing a yellow button on the side. The dome also features convenient storage along the side to store the stylus, but our testers found that the stylus would fall out of its storage if bumped even lightly.

Convenient Home Menu Access

From the start-up light design, children can decide how they would like to interact with the dome. No matter where they go, two white lines along the bottom can take them straight back to the menu, where they can change their preferences or begin a new activity. The dome also allows kids to save up to 50 of their still creations--although animations will not be saved.

Sturdy Design Requires Flat Surface

The dome features durable construction, and with only two pieces, parts will not get scattered around the house.

Our testers found that, though the dome does not emit sounds for the games or activities, it makes a constant loud whirring noise when turned on. Additionally, the dome must remain on a flat surface to operate. Lifting it will cause the light to disappear, although the in-progress drawing or game will not be erased.

My 7 year old daughter wants to ask Santa for this toy for Christmas, and Santa at our house is an early Christmas shopper, so I picked it up today so I could test it out and make sure she wouldn't be dissapointed on Christmas morning. I had read other reviews that said it is very loud. When I first turned it on I didn't think it was that loud (sounds like a fan running) but after playing with it for 20 minutes to test it out and then turning it off I had a constant buzzing in my ear for about 15 minutes. While testing it I went through some of the different modes especially free draw and games. It does have some really cool effects and games that I know my daughter will love. I tested it in a well lit area and the colors and lights on it were still pretty bright. The menu to choose different options does seem a bit complicated and my daughter will definitely need help navigating through it at first. You do need to hold a yellow button in on the stylus while you are drawing for it to work well which may be difficult for younger kids. I would have given this 5 stars if it would be much quieter, in fact I am surprised Crayola didn't try to fix this area before releasing it as parents will get annoyed by this quickly. This will be an in the playroom with the door closed kind of toy. It also needs a lot of large batteries. I hope they last awhile or this could get expensive to keep this thing running. It would also be nice if it had a few more colors to pick from as there are only 8 and they are pretty much primary colors. All in all I have decided to keep it for santa to give my daughter. She will love the lights and cool effects it can do which out weigh the bad points of this toy. Kids that like to draw and do art type projects will really like this. Plus now it is already to play with so less work for me Christmas morning.

We saw this on TV and even I was excited. We received it in three days! Thanks Amazon. We had D cell batteries all ready for it. It is actually larger than I expected.

Wow, I can't believe how much noise this toy makes. Its really loud and vibrates like crazy. The spinning LED bars run at a very high speed and it is not well balanced. It is a constant rumble and very annoying. I had them take it outside last night to play with it.
From the Manual: "THIS TOY EMITS SOUND WHEN IN OPERATION. THIS SOUND IS A NORMAL FUNCTION OF THE TOY"

After you put in the batteries (4D and 2AAA for the pen) you might want to put tape over a button on the bottom to keep it from shutting off by itself. We could find no explanation of this switch in the Manual. Maybe to protect it if it falls off of a table.

What it does is amazing and looks great. The 'pen' let you choose colors and you can draw anywhere on the 360 degree surface. It will save up to 50 drawings in its memory. There is a maze game, race game and a drawing assistant to make faces. BUT...I will never get used to this buzzsaw and cannot recommend it. The first comment I got as soon as I turned it on was "It must be broken" Put on headphones or blast the stereo when using it and you will be fine.

My daughter is 6 years old and very artistic so we always like to test new products that allow her to explore her talent. This Crayola light designer is perfect for that. You can change your colors with a click of your pen and can draw anywhere on the dome.
Click your pen again and set your drawings in motion, draw something really cool and save it for later display. Hit the reset button and start over, if you want a change of pace you can also play a game. My kids both use a ton of paper for drawing so hopefully this will become a fun alternative.
However it does require 4D and 2AAA batteries and no they are not included, so hopefully they last.
Yes the toy makes noise it reminds me of a fan however it doesn't bother me as I simply tune it out. Worst case your child can always play with it in their room with the door closed. Just remember your buying it for them not you (usually anyway), this is a cool crayola product and its worth it. I can see this getting a lot of use in this house for years to come.
