You are basically mixing paint colors. I think this would be fun if you wanted to make a special set of paint colors for a friend for their birthday or something; but making them for yourself, there just isn't that much fun and entertainment in this product. I think it would be more fun to mix bottles of paint where you could drip and see how many drips make which colors.
At any rate, I don't think the product is a total loss. You get to mix and create something. That is interesting. However, clipping together the product, and storing isn't going to happen. It doesn't stay together. Turning the hand crank gets old quickly. Buying refills is always painful for Crayola products. If you want your kids to mix colors, I would recommend their marker making set. Those come with boxes and everything so your kids can make their own set of markers, or even better, a set for a friend. It is a little messier, but something a kid can actually do and doesn't need mom. My 7 and 8 year old boys had a really hard time turning the crank. This is my 11 year old in the video. Hope this review helps.
The paint maker is packaged nicely in the usual creative and colorful Crayola manner. I seriously think their packaging sells the product in many instances. The device itself is made reasonably well and is very attractive to kids. The kit includes 25 paint squares that each have 5 strips. The strips are placed in the paint bucket part for mixing. A color chart is included as is a small (emphasis added) container of base paint and 15 pots and lids (with labels) that can be reused after washing. The instructions are simple as is the process. Base goes into pot with 5 strips, place on "mixer" and hand crank (no batteries with this toy, which is nice). Simple really. Sure, it's loud when cranking but it's a toy! You can use the paint on the 10 sheets of paper provided with the included paintbrush.
Obviously, there are consumables you will need to replace. As with all Crayola kits, you can purchase the Paint Maker Refill pack for a fair price, though I have seen the price drop as low as 50% of the list price. By the way, the paint is truly washable. Overall, a decent product with what I believe is a short term attractiveness in that interest in this product will wane. Kids are really growing up much faster than I did as a child. Their interests reflect this accelerated maturity.
This works by mixing a base white color with different combination of color strips. The fun happens when you mix them using a simplified device similar to what you see at Home Depot when you buy mixed paint. At first I was thinking this will be another battery operated toy, but I was glad it turned out to be operated only by hand. The racket it makes is disappointing.
There is a chart that the kids can simply follow to create the colors they want. They cannot make dark colors nor it include black, which somewhat limits the number of colors you can make. Still, it is a fun toy and also educational. The amount of plastics in this product will make an environmentalist cringes.
Function is where grown ups have to help. The plastic is flimsy and the machine slides all over when you crank to shake the paint without serious counterbalance (tough for me. Impossible for the 6yr old boy.) Plus, kids can't get it going fast enough to blend fully especially not in the 30 seconds that the instructions mention. Additionally, the paint strips themselves are hard to separate.
However, we found it a fun family craft - it just isn't something you can let kids do on their own while you try to fold laundry.
