3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Martha A. Barton on December 15, 2011
I bought this item on clearance from a major retail crafts store, and was pleasantly surprised by how much my 7 year old enjoyed it. It includes several bags of model magic foam clay, a cardboard castle frame, a slick mat to keep the dough from sticking that has a castle scene, and three figures -- a dragon, knight and princess. You basically just push a soft modeling foam into the cardboard frames while it rests on the slick mat. Then you let it dry for a day or so and it's a cute playset - paper doll like, but with more weight and durability.

My 7 year old really enjoyed doing it. She ignored their suggested coloring scheme in favor of one of her own devise - so hers looked much more interesting than the one on the box when she was done. She created a stained glass effect and added flowers to the bushes and decorations on the flags, dragons wings, knight's shield, princesses dress etc...

It kept her occupied making it for nearly an hour, and once it dried a bit she played with it for another hour or so that same evening. The next day it was completely dry and she played with it for another hour. She has it on her dresser-top now as a sort of display item now, I don't think she plays with it anymore.

My biggest issues with it is that it's made of cardboard -- so not very durable. But it's more durable than paper dolls and serves the same sort of function. My other issues with it are that the box is flimsy and it's hard to store the castle and figures inside it once it's constructed -- and that the princess doll doesn't seem to stay together at the top - during construction it was constanly popping apart and falling over.

My daughter (age 6) loves to craft, but she mostly loves to FEEL with those busy little feely-fingers of hers. This was perfect, because she spent the better portion of an hour rolling little balls of Model Magic and squishing them into the holes on the castle and figure frames. We quickly decided the castle would look better if the stones had other colors swirled in, which is good because so much purple might have become very monotonous.

But, even if she like playing castle (she really doesn't, she gave it to her sister immediately), she wouldn't get much use from this as a toy. As soon as the Model Magic dries completely, it is far too easy to pop out of the frames. Small holes stay filled better, but we've replaced (and taped) the knight's shield repeatedly. The seams that bend on the the castle are also easily split once the castle is made thick with Model Magic, so we've taped them as well.

My suggestion would be, if going to longevity, put a layer of clear Contact paper or strips of packing tape across the back of the frames before playing with them. That would hold the Model Magic in place longer, and support the seams as well.

Still, my purpose was to buy this as a craft project, not a toy, and it filled that role extremely well.
