5.0 out of 5 stars Really fun to do with the kids!
I have enjoyed playing with this as much as my kids. The premise is that you gather crayons, melt them and make cool new crayons. But the fun to me is watching the kids come up with their own creative color combinations. I have enjoyed playing with this as much as my kids. The premise is that you gather crayons, melt them and make cool new crayons. But the fun to me is watching the kids come up with their own creative color combinations. Note, this is not something you can quickly do, as the process takes at least 20 but more like 30 minutes to complete. Your actual involvement is only a few minutes, but the machine is on a timer and you cannot rush the process. You can spend a few minutes getting this ready, then do something else while the time ticks by. The machine locks down, so you cannot accidentally open it and burn your fingers on the melting wax. Nor can you open it until the crayons have cooled off. Once the crayon has been made and cooled down so you can use it, it really does color with all the multiple colors. For example, when you blend red, yellow and green, your new crayon will color in red until you twist it a bit and are on a green spot, or yellow spot. It is fun. And if you don't like the new crayon, just melt it again and start over. I am really surprised at how much the kids have played with this. I thought it would be a one-hit-wonder, but it is not. If you find it on sale, it is definitely worth the price. It is a fun toy that has interested both boys and girls.

Lets get the price out of the way. I saw these for $30-40 around Thanksgiving. When returned to buy, the only available ones were $60-70. Now the price is even higher. I don't know why this is. The reviews for this toy were not great, so we hesitated it buy it because of that and the price. However, my niece (7) loves it and that is what matters.

I spoke with my sister yesterday, my niece (7) still loves this crayon maker. They have used it several times. The crayons that come out are small but "really cool." My nephew (8) tried to open the maker while it was running and couldn't get to the hot areas/melting crayons, which is a plus!

My 6yo started taking the wrappers off the broken crayons in our crayon box before Christmas in anticipation of receiving this toy from Santa. It is a great toy and my son has enjoyed making new swirl crayons. It isn't a toy that he plays with all of the time, but when he does he enjoys it. The only downside is that it is a little pricey.

During Christmas my daughter wanted this, then didn't want it, then wanted it and didn't want it. Finally, last minute I needed one more thing for her and she wanted this. I went to every store possible and they were out of them. I finally found it on here and due to the fact that I waited so long....I paid too much for it but my daughter loves it. The only thing is that if you put too many colors together, like in play-doh, the color turns out brownish. She has really enjoyed it though. And the only crayons to use in it are Crayola brand....the other brands do NOT work well.

I bought this product because I wanted to make some custom crayons for a personal project I was working on.

I don't know if anyone else really found this a REALLY? type of thing, but I found it weird that Crayola wouldn't/didnt' create this item to make regular size crayons (which I did know before buying), I thought that it was a little silly.

It works great. I've had it since March and haven't had serious problems yet. Even for an adult I would even say the melting time takes to long and didn't keep my interest lol

Also I just hate how sometimes it doesn't fill the molds evenly.

But I and people I sent them to did enjoy the crayons.

My kids (7 and 4 year old girls) love this machine and are facinated by how colours can be combined to make new ones. The machine still does need adult supervision of course (crayons are heated / melted by 60w chandellier bulb)and the tray needs to be re-heated to be cleaned of wax residue after each use. The locking mechanism is a good idea (heating area is locked until melting cycle is complete). Lots of fun - but not something kids can do completely on their own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun but buy a BULB !, December 29, 2009

Got this as a gift, and seeing the [...] dollar price tag it is something I would have passed up. And if I had to buy it myself I would pass it up. I can see 40 bucks tops for this thing.

Getting the price out of the way it is very fun and you can learn what colors mix to make other colors. You can use all the flakes in the crayon sharpener to make new crayons and if the tips break off you are not to sad, actually you are kind of excited.

Bad design part is once the timer is set you can not lift the lid. This is for safety cause the parts inside are hot. If you are creative this is easily bypassed so you can open while heating to mix the colors with a little stick and add fine glitter to the mix to make your own sparkle crayons.

For [...] bucks I would hope this thing would have made full sized crayons. It makes these smaller thicker half height crayons that you have to put end too end in a little holder. Still works well I would have preferred 2 full sized crayons instead of 4 half height ones.

But it is a lot of fun overall and lets you reuse all those little stubby crayons.

I bought this for my little sister and she and my mother both say they enjoy creating "new" colors! They didn't even bother to use the crayons that came with it, they just broke them into pieces to make new ones. Sure it takes a little time, 20 minutes or so, but they both think it is well worth the wait! This is a great idea for using up all those little scraps!

My kids have a lot of broken crayons, and this toy is the solution. Not only is it fun for them to make new crayons, but it is certainly better than throwing away the broken ones. This toy melts the crayons into a mold, and then when they cool you have a brand new (sometimes multi-colored) crayon. For younger kids, adult supervision is certainly required, since you're dealing with molten wax.
