Two Creative Ways to Glow
The Glow Explosion Spin Magic is really two projects in one, with a mobile option and a shadow-scene option to choose from. Whether you choose the mobile method or the shadow-scene option, both look wonderful when completed. With the mobile, kids color white pop-out shapes and clip them to the base unit using flexible, adjustable clips. These shapes then spin around like a mobile.

To create a shadow scene, kids color a background sheet and wrap it around the mobile base, sliding the sheet into the base's holders. Next, kids tuck black pop-out shapes into the background's special slits, forming a shadow scene that glows and spins slowly.

Construct the Spin Magic Together
Though the instructions are easy to follow, certain aspects of this kit make it well suited for parents and child to complete together. Our testers found the Glow Explosion markers require strong force to color effectively, so young children may require adult assistance. But once colored, the fun shapes are ready for the Glow Explosion Activator marker.

The Glow Explosion Activator marker applies a nontoxic coating that glows in the dark. The glow effect lasts for four hours and is most vivid in absolute darkness. Although the Spin Magic creates a short-term art display, the finished project can still provide children with a strong sense of accomplishment.

Art and Science Spin to Life
Not only does the Crayola Glow Explosion Spin Magic set make for a fun project, but it also offers educational opportunities. The pop-out shapes are thematic, including transportation, dinosaur, and space themes. Parents can help increase a child's interest and vocabulary by exploring how the objects within a theme are related. This kit also offers the opportunity to discuss the science of phosphorescence (why things glow).

What's in the Box
Crayola Glow Explosion Spin Magic base, four Glow Explosion markers, one Glow Activation marker, six flexi-clips , one blotter card, four Glow Explosion Sheets with pop and clip figures, five pop-out shadow scenes, and instructions.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
I have a 6 year old and thought this would be a great art project to do together. However, as fun as this sounds, it is a frustrating experience.

My observations:
-The markers were difficult to use. I had to push and push on them to get the ink flowing and then my daughter got frustrated trying to color. You have to use short strokes and squeeze the markers very hard to keep getting ink.
-The paper cutouts are easy to punch out.
-You have to be very careful how you attach the clips for the mobile. Because you plug them into the base (which spins two ways) you have to watch out or you tie up all the clips in one rotation.
-The spinning shadow scene was a bit easier to use on the spinning base but still a pain to color.
-The glowing colors were okay and it was fun to watch for a little while. The colors were not what a would consider an "explosion" however. They are very muted compared to the photo on the box.
-The glow in the dark aspect only lasts 4 hours (according to the box.) It didn't last nearly that long for us.
-You need 2 AA batteries which are NOT included in the box.

My daughter enjoyed it for all of 10 minutes. Not something we would recommend until they can fix the problem with the ink in the markers. It's a great idea- but fails in execution.

Comes with: 1 Spin Magic Base Unit, 3 long flexi-clips (12") and 3 short flexi-clips (6"), 6 Glow Explosion Sheets, 4 Glow Explosion Markers, Glow Explosion Activator, blotter card (a piece of cardboard), 4 glow explosion sheets with pop & clip figures, and 5 pop-out shadow scenes.

The age range on this says 6+, but I think someone that young would still need help with this. For example, you need a screw driver to put batteries in the base unit that makes the creations spin. (It requires 2 AA batteries. Batteries are not included.) Also, the manual warns that the markers contain pigments that stain. It would make a fun creative activity to share with your child.

My main issue with this product is the poor performance of the markers. You press the tip down for 2-3 seconds to get the color to start flowing. Only it never really flows. It stops flowing pretty quickly. The only way to get any real color is to color in dots by constantly depressing the tip. The manual warns that the color will appear light but I noticed when checking out the glow effect, that the only spots that had any true glow were the ones with more color where I'd depressed the tip. The glow lasts up to 4 hours so it's best not to start this project in the morning. There's lots of paper, but I would have liked more colors than just the four.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The bottom line here is that this product just doesn't do what it promises. It isn't the easiest thing to use and it doesn't really bring anything worthwhile to the table. Coloring with the provided (and necessary) markers was difficult (why don't markers want to color anymore?) and while the cutouts were easy enough, the finished product has a cheap quality to it. The glowing colors are muted (nothing like the vibrancy on the box) and the coolness wares off very soon, even for children. Soon after it was opened it became `no big deal', and that is sad. Toys are supposed to be fun. This product is false advertising.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
Designed for kids 6 or older, Crayola's Glow Explosion Spin Magic (one of the products in their Glow Explosion line) provides a fun experience for both the parent and the child and makes quick, fun projects. My son is totally not artistic but he likes Crayola things so when he opened this he immediately set to work. He needed no help coloring but to attach the shapes and shadow sheets was quite tricky for him (and even a bit for me), so I showed him how to do it. The toy is mess-free and offers some quality time. The only thing is, they should have included more materials in the package. I got this for free trial but when I saw the price on Amazon, I took a point off the rating. But if you can find this on sale for 20 or less, I think it'll be a good deal. (Makes a good birthday gift, too!)

Avoid this product! Sure, the kids enjoyed the glow-in-the-dark markers for a few hours, but they then started complaining about some horrible smell. I didn't think much of it until later when I went in the room where they had been drawing and smelled the noxious fumes myself. Soon, the air in the entire level of the house was noxious. I bagged up the product in two plastic bags, took it to the basement, and the next day the air there too was unbearable. It's a strong, unnatural chemical smell, irritates the nose and eyes, and I cannot believe it's not toxic. I would never let a child sleep with this enormously annoying smell in their room. The smell emanates from the colored pages even when the markers are capped. By the next day, this thing was in the trash and the house was freezing cold as we had to air it out on a cold December day. The smell makes it an awful, unusable product.

The glow effect only lasts 4 hours and of course this information is nowhere to be found on the box. It is only after you pay almost $20 for it, open the instructions and find out that no matter how hard your kids work on decorating the paper provided, no matter what plans they made for displaying their artwork afterwords, once you applied the glow activation marker, the glow effect will last only for 4 hours and them you can just put the whole toy in a trash can!
Save the environment and money, do not buy this junky toy.
