5.0 out of 5 stars This chalk is specifically made for children's plastic blackboards, NOT real slate chalkboards...
FYI to the many other reviewers who seem to be confused. This product is specifically formulated for the plastic blackboards made in children's easels and toys, NOT the old school chalk boards made from slate. It works perfectly fine when used for the correct purpose. My daughter has a Crayola easel and the instructions specifically say to use this anti-dust version so...

I have used Crayola chalkboard chalk for years, along with several other brands. I have used Crayola chalkboard chalk for years, along with several other brands. I have used all of the past types of Crayola chalkboard chalk - white Anti-Dust, white AN-DU-SEPTIC, yellow Sight-Saver, and mellow gold EZ-SYTE. In the past, I can confidently say Crayola chalk was the best. However, THE RECIPE HAS BEEN CHANGED. I tend to think it probably happened when Binney & Smith became no longer associated with Crayola. This new chalk that is being sold as the white AN-DU-SEPTIC is absolutely NOT the same white AN-DU-SEPTIC that Crayola used to manufacture. This new chalk is grainy, softer, and contains hard spots that scratch and damage the chalkboard writing surface. I don't know what they have done, but the chalk recipe has been changed, and this new stuff is nothing but chalkboard-damaging junk. It really is sad because what was once a great product has been turned into a third-rate product. Because of this, I have made a move to another brand and absolutely WILL NOT allow Crayola chalk to be used on my chalkboards. They are entirely too expensive to get damaged and scratched.

It works perfectly fine when used for the correct purpose. My daughter has a Crayola easel and the instructions specifically say to use this anti-dust version so the plastic surface doesn't get scratched. If you are looking for chalk for the slate chalkboards, you'll need to go with a different brand.

1.0 out of 5 stars Crayola Chalk, March 20, 2009
This review is from: Crayola Non-toxic Anti-Dust White Chalk. (One Box) (Toy)
I am an Algebra teacher and use this chalk daily only because the school supplies it. I am going to purchase my own chalk in the future. The chalk is not anti-dust. I need to clean the tray on my chalk board daily to remove the dust as it has become a problem getting on everything from my computer to my overhead projector. It even get in the lens of the overhead.
This chalk is also only 5/16" in diameter instead of 3/8". This does not sound like a lot (1/16") but is enough so this chalk does not work with standard chalk holders. It is too narrow for them to grip it and the chalk pushes into the holders, which means you get chalk and dust all over your fingers and hands. A real pain when you touch any clothing, papers, etc.

This review is from: Crayola Non-toxic Anti-Dust White Chalk. (One Box) (Toy)
I completely agree with other negative reviews written here. I am a math teacher and use this chalk every day. In the past, Crayola's white chalk was amazing: It wrote cleanly and very smoothly, created very little dust, and wiped easily and cleanly. Our school uses Prang's white chalk, which compared to the old Crayola chalk, was much dustier and created a very white-colored black board that was difficult to read after a few days. So I always bought the superior Crayola instead.

Now, Crayola's chalk is the exact opposite of what it used to be: It writes very poorly (I often have to write over things twice in order for it to be legible), does not erase cleanly, leaves traces and marks on the board, and chalk dust is everywhere. After two days, the black board is so dusty and white that I have to wash it just so my students can read what I write -- it is worse than Prang chalk now.

Crayola is producing the worst chalk I have ever used and I also would love to hear from others what better brand there is out there.

This chalk is sadly junk. It damaged one of my boards and recently there seems to be even more filler in it so that it hits a bit of it, scratches the board, and snaps all at the same time! Also this chalk does not erase cleanly making my board a mess after just a few problems. Overall I recommend going with Prang's Hygieia chalk and saving the trouble. As also mentioned by another reviewer, if you are a fan of chalk holders (I certainly am) then this will not work in them. Substandard material, size, and pretty expensive for the volume you get.

Worst chalk ever. Engraves more than it writes. Where has all the decent chalk gone?

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best, January 7, 2008
I have tried other brands. This is the true, really true, dustless chalk. No question about it. They may get some dust from the shifting around during shipping. No matter. Just wipe them with a tissue, or wash them with water, and you are set. One tip: do not break them, and always use the same end. That will prevent unwanted dust.

Crayola makes the best crayons . . . and the worst chalk. If you have ever written on your chalkboard with a white crayon, you know it does not erase. Neither does this chalk. Buy Prang or something else. Goes on easier and comes off.

The chalk is very good and writes smoothly. This product is very good and i would not give my stamp of approval otherwise. No complaint here. It arrived in a timely fashion. Thank you for having this product!

2.0 out of 5 stars Bad for chalkboards!, October 27, 2009

This review is from: Crayola Non-toxic Anti-Dust White Chalk. (One Box) (Toy)
This product is terrible for natural slate boards! It is absolutely not the same formula it used to be, which was obvious from the first strokes. It is gritty and scratchy and left scratches on my 50 year old chalkboard.

I expected more from Crayola. I passed the whole box on to the grandkids to use for sidewalk chalk. I'm going back to Prang's Hygieia brand.
