5.0 out of 5 stars Keeping my kids entertained for hours., October 28, 2001

Having the opportunity to test over 900 products means I spend a lot of time using and playing with the products themselves, sometimes I need a little help and having small kids and working with Crayola the two together is the perfect fit.

Testing both the Metallic Blue Vehicle kit for boys and the metallic pink Fashion design for girls I found that the kit were well built and very durable. The unit I tested came with 3 "D" cell batteries, but the actual kits don't have this. Once the batteries were installed everything worked without fail.

The small bulb inside the desk was designed to makes sure no one run the risk of a burn. The bulb is a low-temperature bulb with a cover that requires a screwdriver in order to remove, which in turn minimizes the risk of burns. The units I recieved had tracing paper, 8 pencils, 2 of which were metallic in color and a tracing pencil; which is standard for every kit..

The kit is rated for 6 years or older and I found that with a little help from mom and dad 4 and 5 year old kids can have a great deal of fun. Instructions are included and taped to the top of the desk.

With older kids this unit can travel in the car and for the price this product does make a great gift for all occasions and fits well into any family budget. Looking at the quality of the product it is very apparent the Crayola is making every effort to give the consumer more than they ask for. Overall - excellent.

My 6-year-old daughter received this for Christmas and has hardly put it down. She takes it with her everywhere we go! She likes the way the designs are arranged so that she can create her own look by choosing a top, a bottom, and a background. This has been an excellent starting point for story writing. The tracing desk is very well built and easily portable. Everything fits inside, and it is sturdy enough to handle the constant juggling of house to car to restaurant, middle seat of the van to the very back (over the top of the seat and then hope it lands on the seat in back!). Even her older sister has enjoyed it when she's "allowed" to look at it, which has surprised me because she's not usually into the younger toys. (Not cool!) Overall, I highly recommend this item. It's been well worth the purchase price!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great idea but poorly implemented, December 28, 2000
= Durability:2.0 out of 5 stars  = Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars  = Educational:3.0 out of 5 stars

This is a great idea for young children who enjoy coloring and drawing. It's simply a plastic desk with a 8 1/2" x 11" magnet white board angled on top. Your child places a piece of regular size typing/printer paper on this board and then puts the magnet stencils on the paper and traces around them to make a picture. The stencils are actually thin pieces of magnet with white adhesive on top. There are many of these stencils in different shapes - giraffe, elephant, numbers, ice cream cone, moon, sun, star, etc. The problem is that they come all in a sheet that has been pre-cut and you - the parent- have to punch them out of this sheet. And not only do you just punch the larger piece out, like say a sun, but the sun may have holes for eyes and mouth, etc. that you have to punch out. And they tear easily while your punching them out. I tore 2 and my wife tore one.

So, while it's a nice idea and fun for the child, it's poorly implemented. They should have sent the stencils already cut out for you.

I bought this for my daughter last year. It is her constant companion. It is even helpful with handwriting practice! I have found it to be irreplaceable. My daughter draws with it, and used it to help master cursive writing (her own idea)It actually can help with anything they need to draw or write neatly and accurately. Everywhere we travel, it's the first thing she packs. She even takes it with her when she goes to the doctor, to keep her busy while she waits. Everything fits inside!
