1.0 out of 5 stars If parents want to micromanage what happens in schools, then get a degree
As someone with a very high interest in educational policy, this book was frustrating on many levels. Firstly, the stories are mostly by parents. That's all well and good. I understand that there are times when a teacher or school does not do the right thing and the parent has every right in the world to complain. My parents certainly stepped in when they had to, and they...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Eye Opener, June 22, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
When Steve Baldwin chaired the California Assembly Education Committee, he shook up the education community with hearings on phonics, math, vouchers and others issues. It was Baldwin who led the fight on creating state-wide standards and a state-wide test. Now, with this book, he continues to shake things up. This book is a collection of over 80 amazing stories told by parents and even some teachers. The stories will blow your mind and there are clear patterns that exist - the brush off of the parents by school administrators, the refusal of the schools to listen to their concerns, etc. Some of the stories are heartbreaking and others will make you angry. The overall portrait of schools that emerges from this book is one of schools that care more about social engineering than academics.

5.0 out of 5 stars A strong choice for conservative parents., August 7, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
What is going on in the classrooms of America? "From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth About America's Public Schools" is an examination of America's public school system and the problems with its education outside of the academic curriculum. Written from a strict Christian perspective, "From Crayons to Condoms" speaks on the subjects of multiculturalism, sexual education, evolution, religious tolerance, and more, and explains why certain topics may be objectionable to parents and students. Arranged in a story by story, case by case basis, "From Crayons to Condoms" is a strong choice for conservative parents.

5.0 out of 5 stars No Wonder Johnny Can't Read - Or Do Math!, June 23, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
Rap music played during math class; ninth graders performing plays using foul language; assigning a child to read a book about female genital mutilation; surveys of students asking how much money their parents make.

All this and much, much more is going on in American public schools. And it's documented in "From Crayons To Condoms" in fast-moving anecdotal notes from teachers and parents.

This book is a must-read for every parent of a school-age child. But it doesn't stop with simply documenting the horrors occurring in classrooms across the country. It gives parents tools for preventing their infliction on their kids, help in dealing with what could not be prevented, and legal resources. And there's an invaluable list of entities that evaluate curricula of all kinds.

Yes, it's no wonder Johnny can't read or do math...he was too busy learning why Justin has two daddies, what those daddies do in bed and why one of them may need to wear a rubber dental dam in his mouth. Really.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is it really worth it?, June 19, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
"Can our schools be saved? Yes say the authors, but only if parents are informed and ready to fight for their children every step of the way."

This is the exact discussion my husband and I had when it came time for our oldest to start school. We could send her to public school, as long as we were rabid watchdogs over what she was being exposed to and how she was being treated. In the end we decided why fight? We could probably do a better job educating her ourselves anyway. And presto, another homeschooling family was born.

It really is amazing what is going on in our schools, and the attitudes that these government employees have toward those of us who pay the bills. I can't believe we're paying for all of these "social experiments". But not with my kids, thank you very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great look inside our schools, June 30, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth About America's Public Schools is a great look at the horrors being passed as "educational programs" in the United States today. Read this book if you either have a child in Government Schools (no schools are "Public," as we have no say as to what happens in them) or are considering enrolling your child in one; hopefully this will change your mind.

I've already decided to homeschool my children unless there is a good Chrstian school near where we live (I'm in the Air Force so "where we live" is subject to frequent changes.) I made that decision when I graduated from a Government High School in 2002. Hopefully this book will encourage you to do the same; then seek to increase public demand for voucher programs to free children from corrupt schools.

To address any nay-sayers; I only graduated 6 years ago and can attest to the accounts given in every chapter in this book. I'm sure they have only gotten worse; and saw them in college as well - so don't think that these are unique or radical claims - this is really happening in our schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for all parents, June 17, 2008

I was educated in a big-city public school system at the tail-end of the time when education was paramount, not indoctrination. That's why the stories in "From Crayons to Condoms" were so foreign to me. Where on earth have today's ridiculous "educational" notions come from, and why are taxpayers putting up with them for a New York minute? (Hint: Liberals are involved.)

From promoting Islam in schools that are supposed to be religion-free to encouraging kids to commit suicide, from the "creative spelling" curriculum to math classes in which students spend their time writing about how they *feel* about math instead of actually *doing* math, it's no wonder that we're getting the stuffing knocked out of us by other countries. Disgusting! This book is a true wake-up call for parents and taxpayers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gut wrenching, August 25, 2008
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
This book is a must read for anyone sending a child to public school. It is mind boggling what is forced down the throats of our children, and what the school system feels is important to teach and what crutial education they leave out. There is a definite "dumbing down" agenda and promotion of perverted sex agenda that doesn't need to be in our schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars TERRIFYING - IMPORTANT, July 31, 2009
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
Do you like a good horror story? Drop the Stephen King novel and pick up this non-fiction piece.

For any American parent, a MUST READ. The authors were painstaking in their research. The book is filled with personal testimonies of parents throughout the country.
Conclusion: The problems are systemic, not anectdotal. I was led to the web pages of ceratin state boards of education. What I found was extremely disturbing.

The authors fill the back of the book with resources and contact information to effectively address the issues.

This was quite an eye opener, especially for a retired (for some time) public school teacher. There are many quotes from parents who were shocked to discover what their children were being taught. It is surprising that school board members have approved some books to be used in their districts. Even the California Department of Education has approved a pro-muslim textbook that has definitions of some terms that are completely false, such as "jihad". No wonder we sometimes hear that education is being "dumbed down".

5.0 out of 5 stars "MUST READ" for Parents, March 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth about America's Public Schools (Hardcover)
I wouldn't have believed much of what was in this book if it weren't for the fact that my eldest daughter recently entered 5th grade and changed schools to a middle school in a rather liberal area of the country. She started bringing home books from the school library that contained extreme violence including sadistic torture of children, graphic sex and profanity. She also informed me that her teacher reads books aloud daily to the class that contain profanity.I was disturbed by these books as was my daughter. I started reviewing the books in the middle school (grades 5 - 8) library and found some of the most disgusting "literature" imaginable - some of which would be rated not "R" but "X" if ratings could be given to books like they are to movies.) But, unfortunately, books are not rated, even for children (and I consider 10 year olds to be "children" not "young adults" as the teachers and librarians appear to catagorize them as and so steer them to in their reading selections. )Anyhow, this "enlightenment" has led me to do a significant amount of research in this area and sadly, the information presented in "Crayons to Condoms" is an accurate depiction as to what is going on in our public schools. It would behoove all parents to take some time to really check out what is in your child's school library and what is being taught in their classes. A good place to start would be with the reading of this book, "From Crayons to Condoms: The Ugly Truth About America's Public Schools." It helped my husband and I make the decision NOT to have our children return to the public schools next year.
