3.0 out of 5 stars A blend of excellent and average southern rock, October 27, 2003
This review is from: Crazy Again (Audio CD)
Southern Rock Allstars is a band including veterans (or if you're nasty: "has beens") from Blackfoot, Molly Hatchet, Rossington Band, and Radio Tokyo. Their previous bands as well as this band's name give you a hint of what kind of music to expect. Yes, it's southern rock! Some people might think that a bunch of old, fat and tired guys are way past their prime, but from time to time, Southern Rock Allstars surely bring on the groove. The opening song, "Train of sorrow" seem to be a leftover from the Blackfoot days (written by Medlocke & Spires) and I can't help wondering why this excellent song didn't make it to one of Blackfoot's album. Some of the tracks (on this debut album from 2001) like "Crazy again" are obvious southern rockers, while others like "Dreaming", "Ghost of you", and "Ship of tears" lean more towards pop-rock. There's also a couple of slow numbers included. You also get a cover of Thin Lizzy's "Don't believe a word" and if you get the European edition - a fast live version of Free's "Wishing well" (also covered by Blackfoot). All in all, if you're into southern rock I think you'll find pleasure in this release as well as their follow up album "Danger road".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Debut, February 9, 2009

Solid first outing by some of southern rock's royalty, make this one a must have. This most especially holds true for the powerhouse drumming/songwriting of the late Jakson Spires. Guitars are flawless as always by Dave Hlubeck, who (to me) is still one of the best players out there. I've seen this group (once labled the Dixie Allstars) in the 90's and the fire in their playing inspires me in my own guitar endeavours.

Rounded out by the great talents of guitarist Jay Johnson, and bassist Charles Hart (Radio Tokyo), this band has only put out three recordings. I really hope to hear more, as I feel they still have something to offer.
