Crazy Legs: There's More to Jeff Beck than "Blow by Blow",
By dave@ivserver.com (Nearly to Austin, TX, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Crazy Legs (Audio CD)
When I first read that Jeff Beck had recorded a rockabilly album, it was straight to the store for the first copy on the shelf. I've had the album since it's release and it'still in my essential "12-pack" that's always in the car.If you're a Jeff Beck fan, this is a side of Jeff Beck not found anywhere else: don't miss it. If you've never heard of Jeff Beck and just like rockabilly, don't miss it either. I bought the album with no preconceptions, just a love for rockabilly and great guitar work. This album has both. This is NOT "Jeff Beck and some guys hidden on the side", it's Jeff Beck playing great guitar as part of a fine BAND. Big Town Playboys' Mike Sanchez provides great vocals on tunes that'll be stuck in your head for months. If you've got a convertible, slap this in on a sunny day, turn it up, and go for a drive...if tunes like "B-I-Bickey-Bi-Bo-BO-Go" don't make your day, strongly consider selling the car and shopping for a casket. You're already dead.

Danny Gatton, Les Paul on acid, Brian Setzer. Put them all together and this is what Jeff Beck sounds like on this album ...FREAKIN great!. To sum it all up Frank Zappa was asked about guitar players ..and who were his favorite players. Frankie said ..." JEFF BECK IS MY FAVORITE GUITAR PLAYER ON THE PLANET" Well I say ...F-ing DITTO.

Rockabilly Jeff!,

One of the most unique albums of Jeff Beck's career. I was never much of a fan of the rockabilly genre, but I can appreciate this disc and I listen to it often. Of course, a Jeff Beck album wouldn't be a Jeff Beck album without awe inspiring playing, and Jeff's solos here leave you speechless (not a surprise, eh?). A fitting tribute to Mr. Beck's hero, Cliff Gallup (another great guitarist). For this album, Jeff hires the Big Town Playboys, and they seem to complete the rockabilly picture perfectly. This band has an especially great drummer and singer. "Baby Blue" especially shows this, and it also contains what is probably Jeff's best solo in the album. This disc has a bunch of material on it, and it was recorded perfectly. Jeff and the Boys have an astoundingly authentic sound, and that just adds to the pleasure of Crazy Legs. Anyone who needs that extra little Jeff Beck fix or an introduction to rockabilly should definately buy this album. Great music.

He's got the sound and the style bang on. It's a perfect tribute from one great player to another. Cliff Gallup was a fabulous guitarist and it's cool to hear Jeff Beck playing those guitar licks so accurately. The Big Town Playboys are an excellent band as well.If you like rockabilly you'll love this CD. If you don't, get it anyway and you soon will.

Big Town Playboys are GOD,

I got this release based on a great review, and it's now one of very favorite CDs of all time - desert island material, actually. And the BTP are from Britain! Unfortunately, Mike Sanchez no longer fronts the band. Anyone know where he is? LOVE his voice. I pray he's in another rockabilly band.Everyone who loves rock-n-roll should own this CD.

This is an album that you put on if you want to have fun, and also enjoy the greatest guitarist alive at the same time. Crazy Legs is a wonderful assortment of old rockabilly tunes that Jeff and the Big Town Playboys remake almost perfectly.Danny Gatton once said that this album was the only rockabilly album that he trusted to be authentic. And I agree. 'Nuff said.

Who besides Beck could recreate the rockabilly sound to a tee? This is one of Beck's best albums. I bought it the day it came out and I still love this album.

Crazy Legs - Jeff Beck and The Big Town Playboys,
By
This review is from: Crazy Legs (Audio CD)
Having sampled much of Jeff Becks work in the past, I felt it was time to try something a little different from the man. This album finds Jeff in ground not really explored by his considerable talent before.
Jeff drew his inspiration for this album from Gene vincent and his band, The Blue Caps. The real focus for Jeff was to produce a fitting tribute to their guitarist Cliff Gallup who was an early inspiration to Jeff. He succeeds and then some. The 18 track album consists of 50's style rockabilly inspired music which kicks along at fairly breakneck pace from track 1 "Race with the Devil", which in line with Jeffs love of hot rod cars, encapsulates the feel of the times and you can almost hear the tyres screech! A favorite track of mine is "Catman" which transports you into a far seedier place, with a hot sweaty 50s night club feel. Mike Sanchez's excellant controlled vocals pouring syrup into your ears one second and soaring into 'tear yor ears off' territory the next! All the time ably accompanied by the relentless rhythm section and Jeffs equally excellant 'cut throat razor' guitar riffs. Atmospheric, sums it up I think. In summary, If you love the early sound of rock and roll, you'll love this, it's all there but with modern production whilst maintaining a very authentic 50s feel. You'll find yourself singing the tunes in the bath and wanting to slick your hair back! A fitting tribute to Cliff Gallup indeed. Should you buy it? What are you waiting for?, you know you want to!!

Beck is The Hot-Dog Man Himself......,

Unique & Fabulous CD, Beck can do it all, no two notes sound quite the same, one slides in, one bends in, the next is straight on, and in classic Beck style almost late but not, he just hits it in time. If you listen close, you won't believe your ears.......
