Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Why would a doctor give up a lucrative 25 year career to become a landscaper? Read Crazy Like Me, a sentimental tongue-in-cheek novel to find out. This book contains anecdotes & reflections of a fictional premed student who matures into a “semi-crazy” retired doctor.

About the Author

Jerome A. Kessler, M.D., graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1980, completed residency training in North Dakota, and then started a private practice in 1986. He spent the next 19 years taking care of patients in Sidney, Montana, a town of 5000 people, before taking a medical retirement in 2005. He is one of only a few physicians to be board-certified in three specialties: Internal Medicine, Family Practice, and Geriatrics. He is a devoted husband and father. He also loved his patients as much as any doctor can, but had to leave medicine before it drove him completely crazy. His short novel parallels his own life as a small town doctor – who happens to have Bipolar Disorder – and his transition from life as a busy physician to that of a thoughtful landscaper.

4.0 out of 5 stars Medical Colleague Reviews "Crazy Like Me", May 29, 2007
By J. Kessler (Montana, USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Dr. McKinley, a retired pathologist, writes "I really like this book. Some doctors will not like it because of what [the author] says about the system, but most will appreciate the familiar story of a young man driven to excel in medicine because of perceived inadequacies in the care of a loved one. It is an easy read, with comfortable narrative style. In a short [fictional] book, he relates his own development as he encounters the challenges of a busy practice and his relationship to his family. Here is the life of a man in the classic pattern of the Hero's Journey."

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it!, April 12, 2007
This was a great read. I live in the same town as the author, and didn't know him until after he retired as a doctor. I loved the book and suggest that every doctor, or doctor in training should read it. Also any of us that are "a little crazy too".
