About the Author

Crazy in Paradise, is Deborah Brown's debut novel, a Florida Keys mystery, which makes the reader laugh, cry and cheer...

My personal ad would read:

There's nothing a new pair of shoes can't cure.

Redhead. Long legs. There's nothing like a strawberry-lemonade in summer. Favorite activity: Filling my pockets with seashells. An avid rule follower when eating Animal Cookies: Broken ones get eaten first, match up the rest, duplicates next, line them up favorite to not, least favorite go first. South Florida is my home, with my ungrateful rescue cats, and where Mother Nature takes out her bad attitude in the form of hurricanes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Crazy read, lots of zany characters January 23, 2012
Format:Paperback
Crazy in Paradise was a book full of strange, crazy characters, each collecting their own set of "I owe you's." From the first page of the book to the last, the action was non-stop. The story began with recently divorced Madison Westin inheriting her recently deceased aunt's beachfront house and properties. Not only does she inherit an old motel, she also inherits an old motel full of eccentric people.

From the insane funeral that will leave you in tears, to the scheming attorneys, mad ex-cons, a centerfold private investigator who is just as adept at making trouble as he is in solving mysteries (and he's also quite the charmer.) Then, there are the dates that Madison's mother tries to fix her up with that will leave you rolling your eyes.

Trouble seems to follow Madison around as she tries to legitimize her aunt's business and she finds herself in the midst of a shootout. The book was not a serious book by any means and would be a great book to sit out on the beach to read. You'll find yourself looking for the hunky P.I. and seeing shady characters lurking by old motels. The story is humorous and you'll find yourself chuckling along the way. Crazy in Paradise is just that, crazy (and a fun read.)

1.0 out of 5 stars I can suspend my disbelief, but not my intelligence August 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In general, if I don't like a book, I just set it aside and move on to the next one. But this book managed to push all my bad book buttons.

1) Quirky, supposedly independent female lead, but indecisive and "shocked" at key moments. Check
2) Incredibly handsome, but mysterious male lead who appears and disappears without cause. Check.
3) Unusual, but helpful sidekicks that fail to cover huge gaps in the plot. Check
4) Sudden romantic entanglement that leads to stalker-like behavior and implausible events. Check.
5) Potentially great story ruined by cliches and zero character development. Check.

What finally pushed me over the edge was Madison's (the quirky, supposedly independent female lead, but indecisive and "shocked" at key moments)outright stupidity. Here's a woman who supposedly got up the gumption to leave her less-than-worthy husband and take back her life. And yet, time and again, the story finds her describing herself as "whiny" and "shocked" over a series of events that wouldn't surprise a toddler. To top it off, even though she's dating/sleeping with an investigator/private security guy, she fails to look into or ask for help regarding the following issues:

1) Her aunt's unexplained decision to select a jackass of an attorney as her estate executor.
2) The hiring of an obviously questionable character to manage her aunt's property.
3) The attorney/executor's obvious efforts to block her access to her aunt's estate, including threats to drag out probate, etc.

The last straw for me happened when Madison, in need of an attorney, calls the jackass attorney.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finished in record time July 12, 2011

Not done reading this yet, but enjoy it a ton. Makes me feel like I am in the scene, that is always fun. Thanks for writing this Ms. Brown.

7/16 - I couldn't put it down. I sure hope you have success. A few years back I was on a reading extravaganza and read 316 books in 3 years. Sue Grafton, Nora Roberts, James Patterson, Robert B. Parker, Patricia Cornwell and Tony Hillerman were my favorite authors. I was just as engaged with your book as I was with all of those. It went whip fast and had a nice twist at the end. Well Done.

1.0 out of 5 stars No Mystery Here. August 3, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
There was no mystery to this book. It was like reading a cheap knock-off of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series. The characters were simple, superficial, and their motives were glaringly obvious. I kept waiting for plot twist, but nope. I had the "mystery" solved from the first few chapters. This book had me wanting to yell at the main character for being so stupid. Overall, this book was a waste of my time. I wish I could have read a different book with an actual mystery element instead. My suggestion: don't waste your time.

2.0 out of 5 stars slow, slow, too too slow March 16, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I was given a copy of this book in order to provide a review. The basic premise is that a young divorcee, Madison, inherits her aunt's home and rental property in Florida. I'm sorry to say I did not finish it. I did get a third of the way through, but at this point no mystery had ensued. However, the main charachter had ~POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT~ slept with the "hot" guy who she found on her aunt's patio immediately after the funeral. I know he was hot because she said so at least a million times! She also said things like "there is not a bigger turn on than to want to make love with someone you're hot for." Yuck.

There is obviously something fishy going on as the lawyer in charge of the estate refuses to talk to Madison, the aunt that she supposedly knew like a second mother had a whole group of friends and lifestyle that neither Madison nor her family knew about, and there is a sleazy manager in charge of the property Madison inherited. I kept waiting for her to fire the lawyer, tell off the sleaze, and DO something. All she was interested in though was the "hot" guy, Zach. I finally gave up. Too many good books are waiting for me.

1.0 out of 5 stars Romance novel, and not a very interesting one.
I think maybe the mystery part of the book would have been interesting - the premise sounded promising. I just couldn't slog through all the tedious romance novel. Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Above Average Chick Lit.
The pacing is very good. The mystery is light & the homicide happens almost mid-book but the pace & the story keeps you reading. Will definitely read the next book in this series.

More About the Author

The Paradise series, are Florida Keys mysteries, "great as stand-alone reads, but they're like chips...you won't be able to devour just one!"

I've been writing, in one way or another for as long as I can remember; poetry, sappy short stories (my best friend made me swear that I'd never show anyone until I changed the names), and a romance novel shoved under my bed.

I wanted to create books with a wide-range of unforgettable characters, with heat and romance, and lots of guns. It wouldn't be complete without a slice of humor and charm.

I live with my family and demon children aka rescue cats in South Florida.
