I have quilted in the past, but I have never made a crazy quilt. I was interested, so I purchased this slim 80 page book from Amazon. It is a large format (magazine-size) book. I didn't expect to learn much in 80 pages, but this slim volume packs a lot of information. There are a few pages devoted to the history of crazy quilting, showing some made in the 1800s that look like they were made yesterday -- yes everyone, our work will probably outlive us as well. Then there areas devoted to getting started (fabric selection, texture, balance), the basic how to regarding crazy quilting (including how to build on the foundation & piecing), problem solving, trims & finally embelishment. There are also 12 step-by-step projects with complete instructions and full size pattern drawings for you to trace and use for the projects.

This is a super book for crazy quilting! I feel like I could confidently start one today. This book was a great purchase.

Crazy quilt books by Judith Baker Montana are always welcome in my quilt library, and this second edition proved to be an exceptional choice. There are always new techniques to be learned, and new variations of embroidery stitches and designs. Once again this author has provided inspiration for making more and more crazy quilts. The photographs of flowers are excellent and suggestions for making smaller items instead of large quilts are challenging me into a different direction.

Since I have several Judith Baker Montano books, I found this one to be a little disappointing since it's title uses the word "Handbook". It is however, chock full of beautiful photos. Probably better for someone who is just venturing into Crazy Quilts to get a better sense of the variety of techniques and how different each one is in the final product.

I was somewhat disappointed in the quilt part of the book, but I love the section at the end of the book where Victoria embroidery stitches are given (complete with directions for some for lefties.

Well written and illustrated. It gave a varity of ideas and suggestions. It can be used by the novice and seasoned quilter. I would also suggest her encloypedia of stiches.
