I don't consider myself a jazz aficionado: my musical tastes are eclectic and jazz CDs ususally don't bubble up to the top of my purchasing list. However, listening to this disc in a store recently I found myself unable to keep my foot from tapping. These tunes are so danceable, especially "On A Roll", yet eminently enjoyable. I can assure you this disc will find heavy rotation in your CD changer. The music is funky, yet, approachable. I can imagine parents sharing this with their children to broaden their sonic palettes. enjoy...

You can tell that DTTB means business.Echoes of Brother Jack McDuff, Brecker Bros, Players Assn, Roy Ayres, even Cannonball Adderley and Brian Auger ring true from each one of the ten splendidly crafted tracks. Don't listen to the samples to get a flavor, that would be like listening to one instrument and believing you have an orchestra. Electra Glide opens up with a slow groovin'double sax attack reminicent of Adderley's Work Song. The next track, On a Roll is DTTB doin their thang jammin tighter than a bra on Pamela Anderson. The title track...well is classic, right up there with "Always There-Ronnie Laws", "Mr. Magic-Grover" and "Birdland-Weather Report". DTTB's first vocal track My One and All sounds admittedly like Incognito at it's best-but with definitely better musicianship and arrangement. Special recognition has to go to Neil Angilley the hardest working keyboardist in show business and producer Stuart Wade. DTTB is by far is the best live jazz show on the road and guaranteed to have you bumpin' in the isles.....

The Boys Just Keep Cranking Out the Jams,
By A Customer

DTTB has done it again! "Crazy Vibes and Things" continues the DTTB tradition of mixing jazz and funk into a heady brew that defies you not to get totally lost in it. The CD opens with the simmering funk vibe of "Electra Glide", which you may have already heard if you went to see DTTB on their 2001 U.S. tour. As is the case with DTTB CDs, it's really hard to pick out a favorite track but I find that I hit the repeat button for "On a Roll", "I Softly Surrender (to You)," and "Stargazer.""Crazy Vibes and Things" also has the first DTTB vocal track, "My One and All." Frankly I was a little afraid that vocals would might take away from the already-solid DTTB sound, but the voice of Hil St. Soul complements the track quite well. I got this CD several days ago, and it has not left my CD player yet. If you're looking for the perfect CD for those Saturday cookouts, beach days, or better yet flying down the highway with the top down...your search has now ended.

I know funky jazz and how it should sound. DTTB has accomplished this feat. The bands driving melodies create a pleasing euphoria similar to what I felt when I heard earth, wind and fire for the first time. I believe DTTB is destined for similar fame. You just can't match that funky sound anywhere else. My advice is to buy all of their albums and you won't be disappointed.

More Groove Oriented,
This review is from: Crazy Vibes & Things (Audio CD)
Paul "Shilts" Weimar, who is also a member of DTTB, has an album entitled, "See What Happens." Shilts' album, "SWH", eventhough different, has some similarites to "CVAT." "CVAT" is a little more funky and melodic compared to DTTB's previous albums. Like "SWH", "CVAT" is a little more groove oriented than DTTB's earlier work.Something I noticed on both "SWH" and "CVAT" is that the first song on each album, eventhough good, has more of a "just getting started" sound to them. When the albums get to their second songs, that's when both albums take off. From that point on, there's no stopping either of these albums. "CVAT" has a very pleasing, enjoyable sound to it. This is one of those albums that never lets up. One song after another, a funky, pulsating groove. In addition to that, this album has a very hip, cool sound to it. Track# 9, "Searching for a Simple Groove", if that doesn't cause you to groove, then I don't know what will. My favortie song on this album is the title song, "Crazy Vibes and Things." You need to watch out for this song. This song sounds so good, that it hurts. This is one of the best sounding albums that I've heard in a long time.

Plenty of fat bass, killer sax, good vibes and funky grooves. Excellent! Different than each of their first 3 CD's of course, but isn't that to be expected? Crazy Vibes is right up there on top with the rest and is sure to become another big hit!

This is great music. Jazz influences, driving beats and melodies that compel you to listen often. My favorite track, "I Softly Surrender (To You)", is one of the most interesting, and beautiful compositions I have ever heard. This CD is a must have.

I have all the cds and they are great, this one is great alsoI look foward to each one coming out and this one was worth the wait just like the first two. I do think they need to start puttin some singers on the tracks more tho, the music will be the same but that much better. this is good and worth buying and so far they are 3 for 3 , cant wait to see the next or hear it .

Groovin' funk/jazz/dance,

Down to the Bone really puts the fun back into modern jazz. Their blend is more of a dance beat with funk and jazz improvisations. This is a kind of disc you'll want to throw into your surround sound system, and turn the volume and bass WAY up. There are no breather songs in this, as DTTB doesn't seem to believe in ballads. Absolutely amazing and fun standouts that you have to listen to are On a Roll, Music is my Drug and Searching for a Simple Groove.Definitely worth buying if you love to dance to your music.

hard to pin down,

"Crazy Vibes and Things" doesn't neatly fit into any musical category. It's marketed as jazz, and has its soul there, but there's precious little improvisation to be found through its ten tracks. It's danceable, with addictive grooves (check out "Electro Glide") but it's not dance music per se. It's soulful (and the spectacular cover art evokes an old Marvin Gaye album cover), but it's not soul music. In fact, the one track with sung vocals (by Hill St. Soul), "My One and All," is really post-modern in its approach. There is no classification for this album except well-written and well-performed. "Crazy Vibes and Things" is perfect for a chilled-out dinner party or a groovy night at home. All is not wonderful here, though little is wrong. The songs tend to blend together, and go on about two minutes too long apiece, weakening what should be a tighter package from such talented musicians. But if you like Paul Hardcastle, Four80East, or other Down to the Bone albums, you'll love this one. |
