Editorial Reviews

Review

Rovetch paints a wonderful picture of this magical, mystical land that has given so much to the United States. -- Daily Camera, June 4, 2006

You don't need to be on the road to either Ireland or disability in order to appreciate The Creaky Traveler in Ireland, which offers a set of travelogues blending history, culture and sightseeing opportunities for the older crowd. Fun encounters with alternative cultures - such as Celtic spiritualism - as well as popular tourist sights make for a fun set of travel mishaps and adventures which vividly bring the country to life. --California Bookwatch

In spite of being old enough to consider themselves "creaky", Warren Rovetch and his wife like to explore the most far flung areas of the countries they visit. In the first book of Rovetch's Creaky Traveler series the two of them investigated the wild charms of the highlands on the northern most sliver Scotland , what that book calls Great Britain 's last wilderness. In The Creaky Traveler in Ireland, the second book in his series, Rovetch and his wife travel through Ireland 's south western counties, the counties that are the farthest away from the European mainland.

Rovetch says that while the scope of what he can manage (walking, stairs, etc) has diminished some with time, his capacity to find meaning and enjoyment in his travels has grown. The range of his book makes this easy to believe. It is a memoir, a travel guide, and a history book. Rovetch covers Irish myths, geology, authors, music and story telling. He explains the origins of Irish coffee and the recent economic transformation that has earned Ireland the nickname "Celtic Tiger". We learn about the places he stayed, the people he met and the things he saw. There are poems, maps, 16 pages of color photos and an entire chapter on Celtic spirituality.

The Creaky Traveler in Ireland is an enlightening and enjoyable guide for both armchair travelers and vacationers interested in a slow, in-depth, comfortable journey with plenty of time to connect with local people and savor their life and culture. Look for more titles in the future. Rovetch plans for his Creaky Traveler series to go on as long as he does --Pathways Magazine, August 2006

From the Publisher

This is the second in Warren Rovetch's Creaky Traveler series of entertaining and informative travelogues that include tips for "the mobile but not agile." This time, Rovetch goes to the Irish counties of Clare, Kerry, and West Cork, staying in charming B&Bs but also getting to know the locals. He mixes history and culture with sightseeing to give us a very personal look at the places and people he visits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique perspectives for "agility challenged" travelers to Southwestern Ireland, August 8, 2006
This review is from: The Creaky Traveler in Ireland: A Journey for the Mobile but Not Agile (Paperback)
The second title in the unique 'Creaky Traveler' series, "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland, Clare, Kerry, and West Cork: A Journey for the Mobile but Not Agile" by Warren Rovetch provides unique perspectives for "agility challenged" travelers to Southwestern Ireland. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" provides so much more than just another guide to the local sights to see and the Bed and Breakfast places to stay in while traveling through The Irish counties of Clare, Kerry and West Cork. Warren has an exciting eclectic personal background that he draws upon as a rather gifted writer. For example, he has been an economist, a textbook publisher, a creator of an environmental education and conference center on the Columbia River, and a Fullbright Scholar. He has created many projects focused on new approaches to learning and education. He was widely traveled even in his pre-creaky days, so his recent series is an expanding of his experience that is especially appealing to mature adult travelers. You might say he has "been there and done it and got the T-shirt" at least twice. So it is no surprise that "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" includes wonderful quotations from appropriate Irish literature (translated to English), intimate epiphanies, anecdotes, and other accounts of travel experiences, and humourous musings on the plight of the modern adult traveler and the world traveled, in addition to valuable tips and suggestions about sights to see, walks to take, and places to seek out. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" is a treasure trove of information that can be of great worth to both the novice traveler and the Irish locals themselves. The text is further enhanced by a series of handy descriptive maps and a center selection of beautiful color photographs of sites and sights of interest. "The Creaky Traveler in Ireland" is sure to be another success in this on-going series from Sentient Publications, piquing the reader's curiosity, tantalizing same to wonder where the "Creaky Traveler" will voyage to next. Also very highly recommended reading is the first book in this outstanding series by Warren Rovetch: "The Creaky Traveler In The North West Highlands Of Scotland".

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for planning, May 23, 2006

This review is from: The Creaky Traveler in Ireland: A Journey for the Mobile but Not Agile (Paperback)
While we're not planning on a trip to Ireland in the near future, I enjoyed the Creaky Traveler in Scotland so was pleased to see the author has done a second book, this one on Ireland. The portion covering their trip to Ireland is very good armchair travel reading. My favorite portion of both books, though, is the author's explanation of his and his wife's, G, travel philosophies and travel tips. Even though we are a bit creaky, you certainly don't need to be to make excellent use of these chapters at the beginning and end of the book. Recommended for both enjoyable reading and planning.
