Rockin' Like Millionaires,
By Leapso (Australia City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cream of the Crust (Dig) (Audio CD)
Expert employment of AC/DC technology, with a little Ramones around the edges, and a few musical surprises besides.
The Upper Crust's gimmick is that they play 16th or 17th (or who-knows) Century English or French (or who-knows) noblemen, and the lyrics, which are anything but serious, and are known to trample all over any concept of political correctness, reflect that pose. As a band, they could be just about the best, most reliable rock'n'roll band of the last ten or so years, probably along with the Donnas (not counting the Donna's bizarre pop/sell-out album "Bitchin'"). With the gimmick, and those lyrics, they're hilarious as well. This album is a compilation of material from all three studio albums they've released to this point. The only weaker material is from the second album, which was the least of the three, and even that includes a couple of stand-outs, including their most jaw-droppingly accurate Bon Scott AC/DC pastiche, "High Faluting". If you don't know the Upper Crust's stuff, and the description above sounds like it might appeal to you, this is a good place to start with them.

Take AC/DC, mix with 16th century fops, put on your ascot or your dickie and jam out! Rewarding old-school rock with funny-as-hell better-than-thou lyrics.

These boys have the swagger and attitude down pat and the chops to back it up. Their tongue is firmly planted in their cheek with their lyrics and stage show. Yeah, they do sound like AC / DC at their best and there is nothing wrong with that. Too bad they stick around their Boston base and don't tour and record more often. These guys are a load of fun.
