This splendid collection of tunes moves the feet, keeps the beat. In addition to Leroy Jones, the musicians include: Lucien Barbarin on trombone (whose uncle, Paul Barbarin, wrote Bourbon Street Parade), Ed Frank on piano, Shannon Powell on drums, Bill Huntington on bass, Walter Payton on bass, and Matt Perkins on congas. The following is an excerpt from the album's liner notes: "I remember Leroy [Jones] years ago in New Orleans. He was always regarded as the greatest. No one could touch him. For young musicians like me, he was exciting, intimidating. For the older ones, he was the keeper of the flame. But Leroy did more than keep the flame. He started a forest fire..." Harry Connick, Jr., July 22, 1994.
You, too, can invest in the preservation of traditional New Orleans jazz by purchasing this album. There is no doubt you will enjoy it.

Trumpeter Leroy Jones does an excellent job of playing traditional songs without ever sounding trite, and an equally fine job of composing music that sounds in the tradition but never merely imitative. This is an excellent recording that testify to the remarkable musical heritage of New Orleans music in general and Louis Armstrong's music in particular.

This was Leroy's first CD under his own name, and it's a classic collector's item. Leroy is often considered New Orleans' best kept secret. Once you hear his style of playing, you will be able to recognize it if you happen to hear Leroy on the radio or on somebody's CD player at a later date. I saw him in Chicago when this CD premiered. He excited the crowd in one of those ways where you had to be there to experience it. If you haven't heard this CD yet, check it out. You won't be disappointed, and you WILL become a fan.
