2.0 out of 5 stars one-day course booklet for beginners, January 6, 1999

This review is from: Create a Web Page with Word 97 One-Day Course (Spiral-bound)
This is a very basic one-day course booklet oriented to high-school audience. It totally isolates the reader from html coding, leaving Word 97 all the work of converting clicks and dialog boxes into actual HTML code. It includes a CD ROM with a compilation of popular web sites to avoid the reader the bother of actually going online to look at final product web page samples.

The booklet superficially covers (through 10 step-by-step exercises) the following topics: -creating web page templates -working with tables and adding text -formatting text -saving documents -adding hyperlinks -adding lines, colors and textures -adding feedback forms -adding graphic images -adding marquee text and animation -adding video and sound

Although the book will tell you what options to use in the Word 97 command bar in order to accomplish such tasks, it does so by giving you a blinding, narrow perspective.

Just as an example, in Exercise 10, where you're supposed to learn how to insert graphic images in a web page, I completed the dull-reading selecting and clicking instructions, just to find out that Word had changed the name of my image file into an arbitrary sequential numbered file name. What does the book tells you about how Word 97 treats this situation? Nothing. The author expects you to follow each exercise with no deviation or encouragement to explore and try things that you have in mind, but replicate the simplistic Verity Bookstore web page "study case" instead, and consider your course finished.

After doing that, I threw away the book.
