I am an experienced Ginger Bread house builder and decorator. That said, I ordered for my Christmas Village. I make my own icing using Wilton Meringue powder, The Royal icing Recipe. The plastic tray is very thin I wouldn't use it, too unstable! Buy a Wilton Cake Board to put it on. Cover the board with a layer of icing and let it dry for a day. Use an icing knife and make it look like snow. The main thing about building with ginger bread is, that it takes time! While your board is drying prepare your ginger bread pieces. They break easy so be careful, If you happen to break a piece just use your icing like glue and repair it. You will never notice it when it's decorated! I used a serrated steak knife to saw at the lines so they come apart easily. Now lay out your pieces so you know what goes together. Put enough icing in a decorator bag with a medium tip and connect the pieces that you have carefully separated! Put them in a safe place to dry completely before you try to put your train on your snow board that has dried for a day! Use liberal amounts of icing to connect the train to the board! Now bring in the kids after it has all dried for at least a day! Use your colored icings, and candy now! Have a ton of fun with your children! All that said I would not eat it, I tasted a bit of the gingerbread and it's not very tasty! All that sugar in the icing is not good for anyone! YOUNG OR OLD!!!! I hopes this helps you! I have read all the terrible reviews this kit has received and I want you to know this is not a Quick project!!! Like anything worthwhile you get what you put in it. Merry Christmas to all!

We purchased a Halloween House from the same company and our 4yr old really enjoyed it however the Train has issues. The gingerbread is so hard when you go to break the specified piece it breaks other pieces, the structure is unstable so it makes it difficult to decorate, after all that then the engine ended up collapsing after sitting a few hours. After contacting the company, they mentioned it was an issue they are working to resolve in their 2010 model. I would avoid purchasing this.

Cute as the dickens and really not that hard to do. You will need adult supervision but it turns out great. Can't comment on the tastiness as we never actually eat our gingerbread creations. Definitely worth the $$$.

I've made this train for the last 5 years. It is adorable, if you do it right. First off, the people that wonder about eating it. Why would you want to eat kit gingerbread? You want to eat gingerbread? Make your own. Second, for the parents that need a box to give age for eating the candy? Please, that falls under "Parents Job".

As far as putting it together. I use hot glue to assemble my gingerbread kits (I make houses, Santa sleigh, trees and train). Trying to use the icing is a crazy time consumer, does not hold well, and wastes the icing. Use hot glue, pipe and cover the glued joints with the icing.

We don't eat our gingerbread houses and quite frankly, in these kits I would be quite afraid to do so. Thus, I won't comment on taste, etc. However, this thing is quite cute. We didn't have any of the problems others mention below on the cookies actually breaking. However, keep an extra bag of confectioner's sugar around and whip up your own batch of icing if they do break and "glue" them together with the icting. You'll never know the difference! Here's a quick recipe in case you need it: 1 cup of 10xx sugar (confectioner's), 2-3 tablespoons of water. Stir until a paste occurs and glue away! Ours looks adorable on our island, full of other gingerbread creations. Just a nice touch. The stand hides some of the train wheels, which I hope is more revealing next year. Other than that, highly recommend!

I bought this kit from Toys R US. I have a different variation of this train kit, so I did not need to mix the colored icing, I only had white icing to use and there seemed to be enough for the kit. It did not hold together as well as i would have liked, but just think it needed a little more icing in those areas. My big problem is that it should state an age, or that the candy is not for children under the age of ... The round candy looks like it would be not as hard as it is and my four year old choked on one. We had a scare, but he is Ok now. I didn't think much about it since he never has a problem choking on things like my 2 year old would. I would suggest if you buy the kit and have younger children to switch out the candy before using it. I even thought that the small round pieces were hard to eat. I remember growing up that my gingerbread house was made with jelly beans. I had some jelly beans around and we finished the gingerbread house with those. The peppermint candy it came with was fine. I bought the kit from Toys R us and they didn't look like they were that hard of candy. I never write reviews and wanted to do this one so that anyone buying one will think ahead to switch out the candy.
