5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the Beginner
If you have never looked at HTML before, this is a great book to get you started. Expect no reliance on commercial web editors, this book tells you how to create your web pages in Windows Notepad or a similar text editor. The tools he gives you in this first book match and exceed what a novice would get using a template from a commercial web editor. If there is...

2.0 out of 5 stars Good, not great book.
This is is not the better of Mr. Callihan's two HTML books. It is fine if you are just interested in putting up a basic webpage, but too cursory for intermediate to advanced users. It does have a good explination of the Web and the Internet and their basic protocols. It also details the basic anatomy of HTML. However, the tables portion of the book is limited at...

If there is anything negative about this book, it is that it makes transition to a web editor harder. With the essentials this book offers, it is easier to pop into Notepad and make the change than to figure out the software. All in all, I don't think that is such a bad thing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for beginners and intermediate HTML users...., February 7, 1999
By
This review is from: Create Your First Web Page In a Weekend (Paperback)
This book is the doorway to HTML. I still refer back to it on occasion and I own a web page design and computer consulting business! All the tools that you need to begin successful design are there. The beauty of it all, that appeals to me, is that you can remain a 'purist' and write on Notepad, and not have to use the 'HTML editor of the Month' program as a crutch. I did NOT create my first web page in a weekend, however in a weekend's worth of reading, I was prepared to start...Little did I know then was the amount of time devoted to 'updating'(as I learned more) and the career change that was to follow..=) This book is a MUST HAVE if you are new to Web Design. The writing is clear, concise, and well laid out. Mr. Callihan in no way makes the assumption that the reader is a C++/Perl/V-Basic programmer, and writes in layman's terms. The links to more information/programs are very helpful as well. The trial programs included on the CD are worth the price of the book. This book provided me with the confidence and excitement to create web pages...not the dread that a lot of "how-to create (insert topic here) in 15 minutes" books on the market often disappoint the reader with....

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Resource for Beginning and Intermediate Webmasters, December 30, 1999

After looking through quite a few HTML web page resources in my new job of putting together web pages, I was pleasantly surprized by the completeness and "readability" of this book. HTML commands are explained from an expert viewpoint, but not with so much detail that the reader becomes bogged down. Steve Callihan has written his book from the perspective of what a Beginning or Intermediate Webmaster will need, covering not only the HTML language, but also shareware text editors, graphic editors, and additional instructional resources.

5.0 out of 5 stars If You Are a Beginner Get This Book, April 9, 2002

This is a great book!!! The author does a great job explaining what each tag does and also shows examples in the book. If you read this book starting on Friday, you will be able to construct a webpage on Sunday. My advise in regard to using this book as a guide is to type all the examples from the book into notepad and see how it comes out as you read the book. That way you'll have an easier time remembering some of the code when you create your webpage on Sunday (you can also use the book as a reference when creating your first webpage). If you already know basic HTML, then skip this book and purchase a book that goes more in-depth in regard to HTML such as a Sam's book(I just ordered the Sam's HTML & XML book, but I have not gotten it yet).

The best thing about this book for me was that it helped me toplan and organize how I wanted to design my page. It's a lot more thanjust how to go about making the web page. It also teaches you to know what you want and how you want to organize it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the first web page, December 10, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Create Your First Web Page In a Weekend (Paperback)
Better book than I was expecting for my personal web page. The language is relaxed, yet substantive and concise. The schedule set in the book is truly achievable for anybody (it seemed to me) who uses a computer daily, yet is not a "guru".

I also loved all of the software he offers on the accompaining CD (graphics and FTP software) and the list of useful web links that he offers in the back.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT book on HTML!!!, March 16, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Create Your First Web Page In a Weekend (Paperback)
WOW! This book is awesome! Before reading it I had a minimal knowledge of HTML and web page design. I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone that wants the know-how to make their own web site/page. Want to see what it did for me? Visit my first web site at geocities.com/SoHo/Exhibit/8525 . It did take me longer than a week, but only because I wanted to plan out a multi-page site. A very easy book full of great info, and the CD has tons of great programs, tutorials, graphics, help, et cetera. Learn everything you need to know with this book! Happy webbing!

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Not a bad book, in fact good if you overlook some of the errors contained within (these may be publishing mistakes). The book will help you get a web page up, though to do it in a weekend you will have to dedicate that entire weekend's time to study and practise. I found Steve's approach a little too vague at times and too simple at others. Some of his examples are very clear and concise -- others left me scratching my head. And in at least two places there are outright errors as I mentioned above. I would recommend the book to others, but not to an idividual who is brand new to the internet. To get the most out of the material, you must have some familiarity with the world wide web. There are many good references to promising sites for building web pages listed in the back of the book. These and the CD with programs to get you started are worth the price paid. Good book for those who already have a working knowledge of HTML for a reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book for Beginning Web Page Creation, September 15, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Create Your First Web Page In a Weekend (Paperback)
I do not consider myself very computer literate, especially when it come to the WWW (Internet). It has fascinated me enought to try to find a publication that would allow me to learn, at my own speed, the in's and out's of web creation. This book has done just that. Steven Callihan teaches you all about HTML Codes, compatibility issues, and with the examples and exercises, allows you to learn "hands on". I would recommend this book to anyone interested in Beginning Web Page Creation.
