2.0 out of 5 stars Mixed bag with some good points, April 17, 2006

This review is from: Create Your Own Greeting Cards (Everything: Sports and Hobbies) (Paperback)
Pluses: This book is decent for beginners because it has large photos accompanying each step of the process for a project in most cases.
Cons: I say "in most cases" because sometimes it assumed prior knowledge about how to do something and a few times I was hard pressed to figure out what the missing info was. (I'm new to cardmaking, so I need things spelled out!)
Pro: There was a great section up front on making various kinds of paper. I hadn't previously considered making my own, but the steps and instructions in the book make it easy enough for me to tackle
Con: While I appreciated the idea of the cards, and the techniques being used, the end results were kind of arty and felt a bit Stevie Nicks/New agey if you get my drift. Definitely an acquired taste. However, I will be happy to apply their techniques and tweak them to my own style.
Con: I didn't like the way they had all of the card "beauty shots" crammed into a few sections of the book (often far away from the actual instructions) and all of the rest in black & white and a burgundy color. Sometimes black & white how-to photos just don't work when you're trying to figure out where to put the turquoise versus the yellow paper (and it's not in the steps!). If you're going to spell stuff out for us, do it right! This was not obvious to me since the book's insides weren't available for preview and no one else had reviewed this book before I bought it.
**My main beef about this book, however, and also something that is not apparent to anyone given the author is Editor Courtney Nolan is that ALL--at least 85% it appears to me--of the projects also appear in the book Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials by Maryjo McGraw. And in that book, which I also bought, the projects are shown in full color photos throughout. So save your money on this one and buy the Making Greeting Cards with Creative Materials instead!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Editor versus Author, September 6, 2006
This review is from: Create Your Own Greeting Cards (Everything: Sports and Hobbies) (Paperback)
Courtney Nolan is the EDITOR not the AUTHOR. All material is from the SAME publisher. Lots of publishers do this. It is another way to market books.
