Chapter OneCREATE A CHARMED LIFE

Just as it"s easier for little children to learn to write ifthey have come big, fat pencils, it's easier to create acharmed life if you have some big, fat dregmo.

In fairy tales, being charmed was the opposite of being cursed. Nowadays, we're not supposed to believe in either one of those, and yet we do. We give credence to cursedness every time we say, "Wouldn't you know it?" and "I knew it was too good to be true." We believe in charmed lives, too-for example, when somebody else gets the private office, moves to an apartment with a river view, and then marries a guy who strongly resembles Sir Lancelot. It's enough to make us think that some women have fairy godmothers working overtime while ours have taken early retirement.

The facts, however, belie the superstition. People who seem to lead charmed lives do not have a magical assistant, and they're no better or brighter than anybody else. They have simply put into practice, knowingly or not, the attitudes, aptitudes, and propensities that orchestrate harmonious circumstances.

If you learn these when you're young, you get a head start. But you can learn them later, enjoy the benefits just as much, and probably appreciate them more. Regardless of when you discover these precepts, implementing them will create your charmed life-one that is rich, full, meaningful, and manageable. Here's how you can begin:

Look at the wonders that are in your experience already. Where have you come from? What are you proud of? What can you do? What have you seen? Whom have you helped? What amazing human beings have chosen to be your friends, your mate, your children? This is your working capital. Be aware of it and grateful for it. There is little sadder than a person who has ample makings for a charmed life but just won't see it.

Next, thonk about your days the way they are now. How much of your time, effort, and attention go toward succeeding where it matters most: with well-nurtured relationships, well-chosen experiences, and well-tended aspirations? Putting emphasis here is not popular; it seems too real and too risky for the faint of heart. Nevertheless, it calls for only a shift in priorities, not a day with more hours in it. That's because you create a charmed life by doing only a few things you aren't doing already. You get the time to do them (and some time to spare) by eliminating from your life what isn't serving you. Then you do what's life with unmistakable style.

Finally, decide what the life you want looks like. This is just an idea. You're not pouring concrete, and you can change how you see your ideal life whenever you like. Don't edit yourself at this point. Just as it's easier for little children to learn to write if they have some big, fat pencils, it's easier to create a charmed life if you have some big, fat dreams.

Don't worry if your dreams seem impractical or if they're replete with contradiction. Deborah Shouse, a wonderful writer friend of mine, described her paradoxical vision in the form of a childhood memory: "I wanted to walk on the sand and leave no trace, yet I wanted to build a sand castle and make my mark." In the realm of charmed lives, this is both possible and plausible, because creating a charmed life is, at its foundation, spiritual.Although it has aspects as mundane as making the bed (see Secret51), the basis for living splendidly is a growing conviction thatyou are here for a reason, a purpose. What we're calling acharmed life is the life you were meant to live, the one in which itis perfectly acceptable to want the moon, as long as you're willingto get over your fear of flying.

More About the Author

I have eleven books to my credit. The biggest seller is Creating a Charmed Life (it's not new, but people still love it), and my current offering is Main Street Vegan, which is the present focus of my life and work. I'm doing a great deal of speaking on the vegan/health/animal rights/green circuit; co-hosting the Main Street Vegan radio show/podcast on Unity.FM (http://www.unity.fm/programs/mainstreetvegan); and serving as director of Main Street Vegan Academy, a 5-day intensive to train vegan lifestyle coaches (see http://www.mainstreetvegan.net/academy).

I live with my husband, William Melton, in a green condo in NYC. My daughter, Adair (who helped with the writing of Main Street Vegan), and her husband live nearby (they have a yard and garden: in Manhattan! -- incredible). When I'm not writing, speaking, teaching, or working with my own vegan lifestyle coaching clients, I enjoy indie cinema (especially documentaries), reading (nonfiction mostly -- I'm currently fascinated by alternative healthcare and I like reading about raw foods, fitness, and aging well), working out, conversations with friends, vegan fashion and beauty, feng shui, and experiencing the movable feast that is life in New York City. You can read more about what I'm up to -- and subscribe to my newsletter, The Main Street Minute -- at http://www.mainstreetvegan.net.

I have savored each and every page of Creating a Charmed Life. After reading Shelter for the Spirit, also by Victoria Moran, I was delighted that I would have another chance to experience her warm and inspiring prose. What makes this writer such a prize is her ability to truly get inside the heads of her readers. So often we forget what we have read and instead of applying what we have learned we are left wondering what it was exactly that we spent our time doing. With her books, particularly her charming latest, it is easy to infuse her philosophy into your own life. I actually remember lines from Creating a Charmed Life that, indeed, are helping me find more joy in my everyday. In addition, Moranąs practical approach to life and all of its challenges enables readers to apply her principles to a variety of situations. Unlike other books that promise spiritual release through dusting or doing the dishes, Moran offers tips that can be embraced into a more realistic life. She feels like a soulmate to me. This is a book to keep on your night table. Itąs also an essential girlfriend gift.

3.0 out of 5 stars Suggestions on how to be your own best friend January 5, 2008
Format:Paperback
This can be useful: to keep this book on your shelf and open it to a fun suggestion at random. It lists ways to treat yourself as a way of reminding yourself to be good to yourself at regular intervals.

But it may only work if you're a very girlie kind of gal: this is something I don't usually notice unless it's very pronounced as it is here. The author's idea of a good time is to dress up with hat and gloves and call all her best girlfriends and go out for a traditional English tea and then to get pampered at the neighborhood spa. I myself would find that a total ordeal!

So, even though she has some good insights, she and I don't have much in common, and this book struck me as more outer-oriented and materialistic than her Lit From Within book, which I would recommend, and which concentrates on inner peace.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to the title and is ten stars February 15, 2006
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Ok, I admit I found the books title interesting, so I opted to buy the book and am glad I did. Started reading it while getting my car services which was to have taken half an hour but ended up taking two. So I sat and read various chapters of the book whose titles perked my interest.

First chapter that caught my interest is titled Acquire Discretion, which is right on target and in my opinion should be required reading for most Americans who in an age of blogs and tell all television might do well to acquire an art the Europeans know and practice well. As the author notes beginning on page 33 'Discretion is the art of restraint. People who have it do fewer foolish things, when they do behave foolishly, they don't plaster the news on a billboard. .... When a woman has discretion, her selfhood is marked by clear boundaries that ask for and almost always get respect'.

Her chapter on Watch Your Words is something that some of us know and practice and should be required reading for anyone who speaks without reallly thinking first. It might well 'cure' your problem if you are apt to gossip, or even say things that are deemed negative about what you can do vs what you do not want to do.

Ask for What You Want continues along the same lines and will be helpful for those who beat around the bush or play word games. If someone asks you a question don't spend ten minutes talking around the bush but spend one minute getting to the point. If someone asks you how they can help, speak up and be specific!

Another great chapter of hers is titled Be Specific.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book to savor and return to over and over November 20, 2004
Format:Paperback
I started reading a borrowed copy of this. Now I can't wait to have one I own and keep it close at hand. Each 2-3 page essay presents an idea for finding the balance and joy that most of us seek in our lives. There are 75 of these concepts in the book and it covers many of the irritations of modern life.

For example, one discusses coexisting gracefully with the unresolved. One titled "Stand on Ceremony" talks about elevating activities to a ceremonial level to enrich your daily routine.

Another seems mundane, "Make the Bed," but she writes about the standard that sets for your day and the reader sees how a small action makes a difference in life. The examples she gives are very applicable to ordinary working people.

What a great book! I'm anxious to sample her other titles also.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every woman should own this. March 25, 2005
Format:Paperback
I'm not a big fan of self-help books, and usually avoid them like the plague. However, I recently heard Victoria Moran speak at a convention on women's health in Cincinnati, and was enthralled by her - both by her youthful, serene personality and the substance of her speech. She is an adept storyteller, and I was on the edge of my seat during her speech. It almost seemed like she was speaking just to me. So I picked up a copy of this book at the convention, and after reading it through, it now has a permanent place of honor by my bedside. It's a beautiful book, and shows women a way to give tribute to themselves in what they do, and how they do it. There's something about her writing and philosophy that is very appealing.

Since then, I picked up a copy of "Younger by the Day," which I just began and am loving it. It is especially hitting home for me, since I just turned 50 when I began reading it. Eventually I would love to have all of her books stacked in a pile by my bed. They are rejuvenating for the mind and spirit, and they make me feel good about myself. I would also recommend visiting her website at [...]
