Book Description

1555705332 978-1555705336 November 1, 2005
In college and university libraries across the nation, information literacy has become more than just an area of instruction—it has become part of the core mission of the organization. This step-by-step guide is designed to show academic library managers, instructors, and staff how to create a synthesized information literacy plan. The authors offer guidance about how to decide what to teach, when and how to deliver instruction, how to assess outcomes, and revise based on assessment results. The preliminary steps—team building; needs assessment; environmental scans; timelines; and goal setting are outlined. Then key sections provide methods for writing, maintaining, assessing, and promoting the finalized plan. The writing process—establishing a structure, setting priorities, addressing audiences, finalizing and approving the document, and more—is simplified and explained. Special sections include lists of information literacy support associations, definitions, best practices, and Web sites. The CD-ROM enables users to adapt and print their own planning workbook, checklists, and supporting documents to use individually or with larger groups and committees.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As more librarians struggle to teach information literacy skills, the need for information literacy plans is increasing. This resource makes developing a plan easier with its step-by-step approach. Part 1, subdivided into four steps, details how to prepare for the comprehensive plan, including writing, assessing, maintaining, and promoting it. Part 2 consists of an information literacy (IL) tool kit that provides an overview and history of IL along with bibliographies for needs assessment, statistical data, methodologies, definitions, associations, standards, guidelines, and marketing. Part 3 supplies the reader with real IL plans: one for a K-6 institution and five others for academic libraries.

Readers will appreciate the book's content, which is thoroughly detailed, clear, and well organized. The companion CD-ROM compiles the worksheets presented in the text. This outstanding resource is a highly useful tool for all libraries. Sean Kinder

5.0 out of 5 stars A how-to manual for improving information literacy instruction as a college library meets the needs of its students & professors, March 6, 2006
This review is from: Creating a Comprehensive Information Literacy Plan: A How-to-do-it Manual And Cd-rom for Librarians (How-to-Do-It Manuals for Libraries, No. 150.) (Paperback)
Collaboratively written by professional college librarians Joanna M. Burkhardt, Mary C. MacDonald and Andree J. Rathemacher for professional college librarians, Creating A Comprehensive Information Literacy Plan is a how-to manual for improving information literacy instruction as a college library meets the needs of its students and professors. Information literacy is not what it was a generation ago - the Internet and other modern developments have transformed the skills that students and professionals must cultivate to meet their academic needs. Chapters discuss how to devise a plan to suit a given library's needs, and a host of sample worksheets and references are sure to simplify the librarian's task. An accompanying CD-ROM allows users to customize and print their own planning worksheets and easily access the complete bibliography, success stories, and a list of hyperlinked Web resources. Especially recommended for librarians and libraries seeking tools to iron the kinks out of their literacy program and present it to the campus at large.
