The most recent update to Dave Taylor's popular guide includes HTML 4 and still offers great advice for beginning-to-intermediate Web-page authors. Taylor's calm, competent tone reassures those who are creating their first page, but his expertise in designing Web pages is valuable for those who are ready to do more.

Taylor first shows new users what a Web page is, how a browser works, what URLs are, and other basic concepts. He then delves into basic HTML, fonts, and text styles and explains how to make lists, special characters, pointers, and links; add graphics; and create tables and frames. Taylor moves into advanced topics such as background, marquees, image maps, JavaScript, forms, plug-ins, Dynamic HTML, style sheets, and more, using his own award-winning work as tutorial examples. There are a lot of people who know lots of things, but just don't know how to teach. This is definitely not true when it comes to Dave Taylor. His well-written book on the Web's language should be able to explain HTML to anyone, especially novices. I created two websites just using his book, and they look pretty good too!

The only complaint I have is because of the lax coverage of CGI. I still give the book 5 stars though, becauses this is a book on HTML, not CGI.

This excellent book is recommended for anyone interested in learning HTML, and so BUY IT NOW!

I started learning to build web pages with this book and have sinced moved into state-of-the-art WYSIWGs but - I still use html every day. You can design and construct without knowing html but it sure makes learning and understanding a much smoother and easier process. 'Creating Cool HTML 4' is without a doubt the best resource I have on my shelf. It's easy to follow, moves you smoothly through the basics to the higher planes, and covers html thoroughly. And! it's a lot cheaper than Dreamweaver.

Got a really cool site up and running in three days. As an HTML returnie and a professional programmer I wanted a book with lots of code examples, pictures and very few words. This book goes down smooth in just a few days, gets right to the point and is oriented toward accomplishing something immediately. Not a comprehensive HTML reference rather one of the rare breed of technical books that doesn't make you want to blow your brains out with overkill. Excellent use of summary tables at the end of each chapter.
