5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book! Highly Recommended!, November 6, 1999

There are a lot of people who know lots of things, but just don't know how to teach. This is definitely not true when it comes to Dave Taylor. His well-written book on the Web's language should be able to explain HTML to anyone, especially novices. I created two websites just using his book, and they look pretty good too!

The only complaint I have is because of the lax coverage of CGI. I still give the book 5 stars though, becauses this is a book on HTML, not CGI.

This excellent book is recommended for anyone interested in learning HTML, and so BUY IT NOW!

5.0 out of 5 stars Where It All Begins, April 22, 2000
I started learning to build web pages with this book and have sinced moved into state-of-the-art WYSIWGs but - I still use html every day. You can design and construct without knowing html but it sure makes learning and understanding a much smoother and easier process. 'Creating Cool HTML 4' is without a doubt the best resource I have on my shelf. It's easy to follow, moves you smoothly through the basics to the higher planes, and covers html thoroughly. And! it's a lot cheaper than Dreamweaver.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, easy to read, good level of detail., June 20, 1999
By A Customer
Got a really cool site up and running in three days. As an HTML returnie and a professional programmer I wanted a book with lots of code examples, pictures and very few words. This book goes down smooth in just a few days, gets right to the point and is oriented toward accomplishing something immediately. Not a comprehensive HTML reference rather one of the rare breed of technical books that doesn't make you want to blow your brains out with overkill. Excellent use of summary tables at the end of each chapter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great beginning to intermediate HTML guide!, June 24, 1999
By A Customer
For web enthusiasts looking for a great beginning/intermediate book on HTML and webpage authoring, this is the book. I found this book not only easy to read, but also enjoyable. Using lots of exmaples and clear code, Dave discusses the internet and current technology, HTML 4 tags, cascading style sheets, java script, backgrounds, audio, dynamic HTML, registering and page maintenance, and much more. This is by far the best the best starters resource out there I have seen. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awsome Book!, August 13, 2000

This review is from: Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages (Paperback)
The "Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages" by Dave Taylor is in my opinion the best beginners guide to writing and HTML for a number of reasons. First, the book covers each and every subject in a very detailed manner so if you're a beginner, or a pro at writing an HTML, all the information is very helpful. The book also demonstrates how to apply graphics, links, etc., with step to step instuctions and picture in the booklet just to make sure that what you did turned out "right". The book also includes a CD which has on it a demo for many softwares that will help make your web site great, and information in the book to also show you how to use them. Basically this is the best tutorial and reference guide, for a low price.

5.0 out of 5 stars My HTML scripting headaches ended, and my creativity soared., October 7, 2000
By
"light_weaver" (Curacao, Netherlands Antilles) - See all my reviews
Just about anyone can create a website with freeware/shareware HTML editors that require very little to zero knowledge of HTML. That is how I got started as well. But, take it from me, your creativity is severely limited when you design a website solely based on its appearance without ever learning how to code HTML by hand. For a while I had a difficult time to comprehend basic HTML scripting after purchasing stuffy books that solely contained a list of tags and explained by definition what each tag's purpose was. One day a friend suggested the book 'Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages', and from that day onward my HTML scripting headaches ended, and my creativity soared which resulted in great web sites. I definitely wish to recommend this book to novice and intermediate web designers alike.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best HTML Book Around!, April 15, 2005
I graduated from the University of Redlands (California) with a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems degree a few years ago. Many of the textbooks I used were not very enlightening - I suffered through using them and immediately took them back to the bookstore for resale. This wasn't so with the CREATING COOL HTML 4 book. I use this as a reference book now.

One of the classes I took included a web design portion. How fun to create web pages that were exciting and not boring. It was easily accomplished using this book as a guide but someone who knows nothing about HTML design could easily use this and create.

The chapters are broken down from the basics to intermediate items. The author, Dave Taylor, explains exactly what entails a web page, what a URL is, basic html, graphics, tables, links, pointers, image maps, and other advanced designs.

Now many technical books are dry to read and often times leave the non-die-hard techies wondering what was just said. Not true with Taylor. He gets everyone to understand html - those creating their first web page to those who want to do more, those that want pizzazz on their pages.
If you're not a beginner, you may want to skip the chapters in which Taylor explains to new users about Web pages, how browsers work, what URLs are, and other basic concepts. (But it can be a good refresher for those who haven't designed web pages in a while). Next he expands into basic HTML, fonts, text styles, and gets the reader to understand the making of lists, special characters, pointers, and links. Next comes the explanation of graphics and the creation of tables and frames. But my favorite part is next - chapters on advanced items like background, marquees, image maps, JavaScript, forms, plug-ins, Dynamic HTML, style sheets, and much more.
Examples shown in the book are easy to follow and let the reader completely understand what the code does and how it will look on a web page. Nothing in CREATING COOL HTML PAGES is overwhelming and will let everyone create a web page of which they can be proud. I'm a computer programmer, and still use this as a reference. In fact, it's one of the most borrowed books in our office! This book is highly recommended for any level of html programmer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't know html? Buy this book, April 17, 2000
By
Chad Buckler / Esquire (Calvert County, Maryland) - See all my reviews
I didn't know the first thing about html, after reading thisbook (2 weeks) I was up and running with a website in a flash. Itteaches you alot about the basics and slowly builds you up to more advanced coding and scripting. The author talks to you like you are a five year old child who is new to the computer world, THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED, I'm just an everyday Joe and I'm not trying to sell this book, I'm not getting paid to write this or getting any promotions from this......BUY THIS BOOK!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book for HTML beginners!!, February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This book is definitely an excellent HTML book for beginners. I have several HTML books at home, but I found that this book is the best of all. If you are new to HTML, you will surely become a HTML expert after you've read this book, why? 1. Well-explained examples. 2. It covered most of the useful HTML materials. 3. It illustrated some of useful Javascripts, such as onMouseover stuff. Finally, I can use three words to describe this book: "simple but powerful". If you want to learn HTML, this book is definitely the best choice. Give it a shot!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Rookie's Review, March 7, 2002
By
J Hergan (Oak Lawn, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Creating Cool HTML 4 Web Pages (Paperback)
When Dave Taylor's book arrived I was skeptical about being able to create my own web site using only Simpletext or vi. That was a week ago. Since then I have rebuilt my web site from the ground up and although the new site is not the work of a master, it looks pretty good for a rookie effort. Taylor's book took a complete novice, step by step, through the process of building a fairly complicated web site in under a week--a remarkable feat.
This book is a must-have item for anyone interested in learning HTML 4. It is informative enough for an experienced website designer while remaining accessible to the novice. It answered all my questions and provided creative and thoughtful suggestions for building my own site. Clear, concise and comprehensive--go buy this book if you want to learn to create great web pages using HTML 4.
