And one of the best first steps law firm managers can take is to mine the book for its practical advice on how to become dominant in a legal market.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Wesemann's earlier book on Management Myths, this is a fabulous.

While there are some interesting opinions in this book with regard to approaching legal services and pricing, this particular book and the strategies offered are of absolutely no value to firms with less than 500 or more lawyers or firms in smaller markets.

This book offers theories and strategies for mega firms only and is entirely devoid of practical ideas with any application whatsoever for 90% of real world practicing attorneys.

So, if you are a managing partner of a large market mega firm, go for it. If not, there are better choices. Oh, and the book does not offer much in the way of growing a medium sized firm either. The book essentially starts with the premise that you have hundreds of attorneys and need to invest the millions of dollars you have in the bank on your practice to compete with the handful of other mega firms in your region or city. If this is not your situation, its useless.

The actual strategies offered make a lot of sense, and I suspect are very helpful for the handful of firms that are in a position to take advantage of them. If you are unsure what city you should open your regional offices in, or whether you should follow your corporate clients to another city by opening another branch or buying a local firm, this book is for you! However, if you are trying to build a small or medium sized firm, you should look elsewhere. I would have preferred the book description be a little more clear on the utility of the book. This book should not be promoted as a tool for small firms, medium firms, or solo practitioners.

I agree with the other early reviewers. There are many books on marketing law firms, strategy, etc. But Wesemann's book is compact, practical, and memorable. Ton of common sense, applied with savvy. Like any business strategy book ever written, some pages seem a little obvious (enter an emerging industry, both risk is high [industry may fizzle] and reward is high [catch the swell]). Then he describes an attorney who joined a hospital board, was puzzled by the medical problems, and quickly replaced his $300/hr billing with a national-profile and essentially unique $15K/day hospital ethics practice. That's catching a wave, indeed. The book is a great bargain and worth the reading; it's not long (100 pp).

One of the reviews rated the book with 2 stars. I am glad I bought Creating Dominance BEFORE reading the review, otherwise I would have been misled! The review does not do justice to an excellent book that Creating Dominance actually is. I am a lawyer and I was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990, so I am fairly qualified to render an informed opinion regarding this publication. The book is extremely very useful for forwarding-thinking lawyers (or providers of legal services), whether a 1-man firm or a 500-man firm. The book provides essential strategies for moving from where one is to a place of dominance in one's defined space of law practice. The writing style is precise and is devoid of fluff. The writer goes straight to the point, knowing probably that his readers are busy people, always pressed for time. I am going to order his other books, and secure a hard copy of Creating Dominance. (I have the paperback copy, which has all but been extensively marked up with my red pen for the lots of excellent ideas that i have taken and applied from the book). Thank you Mr. H. Edward Weseman for a well-written and law practice defining book! I endorse the 5 stars of other reviewers.

Ed Wesemann is one of my partners in Edge International, so I guess you may well think I am biased. But having recently reviewed a copy, I am delighted to recommend the book.

Ed needs no stars from me, but I truly feel he deserves five of them.

Ed is - as the headline suggests - straight forward. He tells you exactly what he thinks in plain language. His expertise as a law firm manager and consultant is a remarkable source for some very clever ideas and very wise recommendations. His experience on law firm strategic and growth issues is almost certainly second to none. He demonstrates these characterstics again in this, his second major book on law firm management.

When Ed says with Peter Drucker "If you cannot dominate your market, get out of it", most firms may disagree. Experience and history are on their side, though. And one of the best first steps law firm managers can take is to mine the book for its practical advice on how to become dominant in a legal market. And there is much to be found.

While I thoroughly enjoyed Wesemann's earlier book on Management Myths, this is a fabulous. It is curious that no other publication (that I'm aware of) in the professional service sector has explored the topic of competitive dominance. This is a unique topic and extremely well presented.
