5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous, but fantasy means trolls here
This book is gorgeous, with unique, detailed projects and explicit step-by-step directions. Just be forewaarned that it interprets fantasy to mean troll-like, so even Santa and the Easter bunny are trolls. I am therefore returning my copy, and just wanted to warn you what to expect. But it is an absolutely gorgeous, well-done book, and most people will love it.

2.0 out of 5 stars I wasn't real happy with this purchase
It is definitely not a beginner book although they do have a beginners project. It doesn't go into a great deal of detail about the different clays. He doesn't offer much detail on supplies (like what size buttons he uses (small: small, medium and large vrs 1/2" etc). Other books have said never to go over 3/4" thick without multiple bakings or to use foil...

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellant Book for all Ages, December 7, 2004
This review is from: Creating Fantasy Polymer Clay Characters: Step-by-Step Trolls, Wizards, Dragons, Knights, Skeletons, Santa, and More! (Paperback)
This was my first art project book I purchased, and I found this to be a great help. I enjoyed the projects and found them perfect for all ages, and got a kick out of creating my creatures. I appreciate how it is not about being exact but about creating ones own version of the critters. There is not right and wrong, which is great for a beginner. I found myself improving and though they didn't all turn out as the pictures in the book, I was happy with what I created. With the clever writing, I also found myself laughing while doing the projects. I highly recommend the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars What an imagination!, June 19, 2004

I've been seeing examples of this talented sculptor's work on the internet for several years, so when this book came out I snatched it up! I love the humorous, whimsical projects in this well-done book, and I love the free-spirited sculpting he does - detailed, yes, but not painstakingly precise - just plain fun. The result is that everyone, regardless of their previous sculpting experience (or inexperience), is tickled with their own clay "masterpiece." My favorite is the little dragon. Or maybe the Santa. What a hoot! :)

Dinko Tilov is an amazing young man! His imaginative art has intrigued me for years and I have several of his pieces in my collection. His personal story is just as inspiring as his art. Now, he has written one of the best "how-to" books I have ever read. He has captured a perfect balance of presenting the required skills without making his students simply clones of his work. Quite remarkable for a young man who is in his early 20's.

This book is SUPER,the cheeks make the models look so cute.
I dont no how the author comes up with the ideas [at the end theres even a half goblin half pirate gambler!]
I've finished every model in the book and now I can even make my own designs!

I had writtena review before i dont know where it went! so if you see it twice dont be surprised.
What i wanted to say about this books is that its a truly amazing book for beginers and alike.I have been making fantasy cartoon charatcers, after buying dinko's book its has become easier to make them. The book i sso detailed and easy to understand. And yesi agree, every time you see one of his characters u have to grin, cuz they are so funny! The book has lots of lessons to begin with , the cutest is the santa leson.Dinko shows through his book, that its easy to make acessories for the creature with things lying useless at home.Tha armature he uses are the tin foil and wire which are eaaily avaiable in the hardware and grocery shop.the only negative thing i'd like to say is there are no female critters in the book. But on the whole the book is worth the price.
Love the book.

Dinko's book has made it so much easier for me to make those cute little humourous critters. The book is so detailed , that anyone without any clay experience can start creating by just reading through.I am glad I bought the book. And the price is so reasonable.I just absolutely love it.The speciality of the book is that Dinko does not use those "special clay tools". The tools he uses are all found at home with out hassle.Truly an artist, and truly an amazing book.<(...)

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best art/craft technique books ever, December 3, 2006
This review is from: Creating Fantasy Polymer Clay Characters: Step-by-Step Trolls, Wizards, Dragons, Knights, Skeletons, Santa, and More! (Paperback)
Superb from start to finish. If you have any interest in sculpting fantastic creatures in polymer clay this is the best place to start bar none-- and it will take you far. I've done most of the projects in the book and am now very comfortable creating my own critters from scratch. The photos are fantastic with just the right amount of detail (no shots taken from halfway across the room!), the text is very clear (and funny!), and the book is simply a lot of fun overall. Can't recommend it highly enough for anyone interested in the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute and Creepy!, April 12, 2004

I just received this book in the mail. I am looking forward to starting on some of the critters. I think this is a good book for a beginner. Tilov stresses there are no hard and fast rules, and the book provides photos for most of the steps in building the characters. All the photographs are in color. I've read through several of the projects, and he gives a lot of detailed instructions. I think it was a very good purchase for the price, and I can't wait to get started!
