Book Description

October 1, 2011

Creating with God is a boldly truthful, sometimes funny, and deeply spiritual account of where babies come from and where babies take us. Jobe reads the Bible through the lens of her back-to-back pregnancies and finds that God shows up in pregnancy when we least expect it. Weaving together biblical reflection, her own story, and the stories of the moms around her, Jobe reveals the ways in which pregnancy is at the heart of God’s work in the world. She invites her readers to see the image of Jesus in pregnant women, feel God abiding in the work of pregnancy, and to consider the ways that pregnancy can train us in the very practices we need to live a life of faith.

5.0 out of 5 stars not just for pregnant women October 26, 2011
Format:Paperback
When my wife and I were expecting our daughter, we got a copy of the classic What To Expect When You're Expecting, which is full of very useful information. It's a big book, and has grown with the experience of thousands of pregnancies. But I was struck by how little it had to say about the spiritual lives of women who are bearing children.

I was surprised in part because, as a pastor, I know having kids is one of life's experiences that often gets people involved with God. This is one reason why I'm so grateful for Sarah's book--it's needed.

But it's also really good. And it addresses more than the immediate need I most hoped it would. Beyond offering good news to pregnant women, it illuminates the experience of pregnancy for those who've not been (and those who never will be) pregnant. This is a book to give to anyone who's pregnant or has been--and a book to read if you know someone who fits that description.

What an honest, vulnerable, authentic, and amazing book this is. Sarah is real about the challenges and also the beauty of pregnancy. The way that she relates her two pregnancies with Naomi and Fay to the Biblical narrative is absolutely beautiful and insightful. It is a book I will read several times.

Thank you Sarah for the laughter and the tears. Thank you for writing so plainly and yet profoundly. Thank you for holding onto God. And thank you for sharing with all of us what you learned about our crazy, all-loving, and surprising God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made me laugh and cry February 26, 2012

I was so pleased to read this book, which combines personal reflection with real spiritual insight. The author, a minister and mother, manages to walk through Biblical teachings about women, motherhood, and childbirth in a way that offers comfort and empathy to expectant mothers. Funny, heartwarming, and discerning.
