3.0 out of 5 stars Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay by Katherine Dewey
My 1st book by Katherine Dewey -Creating Lifelike Figures in Poymer Clay, was absolutely fantastic. When I learned she had written a book on Creating Lifelike Animals,I couldn't wait to get that one too!! She explained proportions of the body to assimilate each animal. It was like starting with a skelton, then adding muscles, and fur.
The infomation on how to make...

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for Polymer Clay Enthusiasts, April 5, 2000
This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
Katherine Dewey has worked magic with this book. The instructions are clear and thorough enough that a even a beginning sculptor would be able to create wonderful likenesses of the animals portrayed.

For those more familiar with the aspects of polymer clay and sculpting, this book contains valuable information and techniques that may be applied to an artist's own work; thereby improving its strength and quality. Katherine's use of armatures and proportion is well explained and portrayed, making this book an excellent learning resource for beginning sculptors, as well as a superb reference tool for advanced sculptors.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL, April 5, 2000
This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
This book is so great. The step by step details were so well photographed, and so detailed. The animals are so cute and so life-like. Katherine has so many suggestions on tools, from making your own to purchasing them. This was my first attempt at realistic animals. I've all ready made three of the cutest little animals, and everyone is asking where I bought them. I LOVE this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars You're studying with a master in this book, August 15, 2000

This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
Well, now that the "Sculpey" craze of a few years back has settled down, artists can settle down, too, & enjoy the many fine books that continue to be published by North Light, Sterling & other companies. Sculptor Katherine Dewey, who has been making, teaching & exhibiting polymer sculpture for years, put her talent & experience into "Creating Life-like Animals in Polymer Clay." So if you're ready to expand your creative field or advance your technique, you're studying with a master in this book. Katherine guides you through all the steps with strong advice that will stay with you, not shortcuts that take out the "art" & leave only the "craft." You'll learn to make ceramic animal pieces that you'll really be pleased to keep, sell, or give as gifts. The greatest rewards from this medium happen when the artist studies it earnestly...Some other fine polymer art books include:

Making Miniature Dolls With Polymer Clay : How to Create and Dress Period Dolls in 1/12 Scale by Sue Heaser

How to Make Clay Characters by Maureen Carlson

5.0 out of 5 stars Kathleen is a genius!, September 24, 2003

This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
I have bought and studied many sculpture books over the years. None have compared to this book, I learned so much, so easily.
Ms. Dewey has found a way to break down very intricate figures into simple to mold parts, and makes the building process easy, and the result amazingly complex looking.
If you have all but given up on your sculping, give this book a chance. I was shocked that she could make my work look so professional and realistic!

4.0 out of 5 stars Katherine Dewey is a fabulous sculptor, August 28, 2004
This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)

This book is great for anyone interested in sculpting with polymer clay.
Katherine Deweys instructions are fairly easy to follow, the only thing that confused me was that you sometimes can't tell from the photos, which way she's holding the clay. (So you're not sure where to place your appliques).
None the less it is a great book for beginners and amateurs alike, and I would definately recommend it.
I would have liked to see some basic patterns for some different animals, perhaps some more common in other parts of the world, seeing as we don't really get any of those specific animals here in Australia. (I wanted to make a dog!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Creatring life-like animals in Polymer Clay, March 18, 2006
This review is from: Creating Life-Like Animals in Polymer Clay (Paperback)
I found Katherine Dewey to be an excellent instructor, her directions were clear, detailed and easy to follow. I appreciated the directions for making your own tools as these can be expensive and hard to find. The tips and directions continue to be helpful in projects other than those given in the book. I highly recommend this book as well as her other book, Creating Life-Like Figures in Polymer Clay to anyone interested in working with this medium.
