This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
I still find myself thinking of certain parts of this book and how they are relevant to something that has happenned to me or to a friend of mine.
I found myself feeling so many things again and empathizing with and envying her for her experiences as well. I also laughed out loud in several parts which for any book is a real measure of success in my opinion. If I hadn't read this I would never have understood why women continue to choose to birth at home even when faced with so much pressure by the medical experts around them. I will have others read this who went through trauma as teenagers who find themselves unable to figure out why they are "just now" finding the need to cope with it. Thanks to Ms. Lewars for writing this book.

Like chatting with an old friend . . .,

This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
Corbin Lewars takes on challenging subjects in this memoir with honesty, candor, and humor. You don't have to have shared her experiences to enjoy reading about her journey, and her conversational, witty prose makes the experience feel like chatting with an old friend. This book is for anyone who has struggled to have the courage to live their life on their own terms. It's an enjoyable and inspirational read.

The journey from woman to mother is surely something to behold. "Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making" is Corbin Lewars' story of her pregnancy and what it taught her and how it brought about her own career. An excellent writer on the topic of motherhood, Corbin Lewars makes "Creating a Life" quite the fascinating read.

The Story Within The Story,
This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
The main story line in Creating A Life deals with Corbin Lewars' risky career move and the challenges she faced in giving birth, but woven within this story line is the even more compelling story of how Corbin dealt with incidents from her past that deeply impacted her relationship with her body, the way she dealt with those around her, and her decisions in life. I was moved by the matter-of-fact and insightful way she relayed the psychological process she underwent in dealing with repressed sexual abuse. In my opinion, there are not enough books dealing with this topic, and I related to her story and appreciated her courage in telling it.

This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
Corbin Lewars has created a completely honest memoir, right to the heart of who she is and how she looks at life. All of us Moms should read this book, it is a real lesson in "baring ourselves". I can't help but feel after reading this honest account of heartbreak and jubilation that we all need to peel away the outer layers and let ourselves shine, with honesty and integrity. By baring her soul to us, Corbin gives us hope, a new path.Let go of protection. Go for it. Cry about it. And just get on with it, doing the best you can. So many women will relate to this book and its message. Thanks Corbin, from all of us.
As the British say, "It's brilliant."

Good Humor, Good Heart, Good Sense,

Context: I'm a grandfather and enjoy an incomparable daughter, a spellbinding granddaughter and a culture hero of a grandson. How we birth and raise our kids is for me among the foremost work/play of the (co)evolutionary process.
I read Corbin's book with complete interest and attention. And I think it was unsettling, revealing, illuminating and that it belongs in the hands of young women all over the place. Now I have troubled dreams, and I will look forward to the next one of her works now that the decks are cleared.

Courageous Woman,

This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
Corbin is a courageous woman....facing her demons. And she writes for the whole world to read - the most intimate parts of her life. She has a writing talent that made me want to keep turning the page to see what was going to happen. I came away liking Jason and her family. Also, the humor was great. I especially liked the part where she tells everyone she is having a home birth. I think she is going to have a successful career as a writer. Thank you Corbin, for sharing your life.

Inspiring Personal Journey,
This review is from: Creating a Life: The Memoir of a Writer and Mom in the Making (Paperback)
An inspiring book that reminds women in particular not to "settle." Lewars takes the scary leap to realize her dreams with her career, her relationships, and wanting to become a mother her way with a home birth. By sharing her story so honestly and bravely, she shows us all that we can take the leap, too, and leave our "Fruitloop University" jobs and whatever else we need to change about ourselves and our lives. I particularly enjoyed the passages where Lewars is baby-obsessed, even crossing the 520 Bridge to visit a friend and her newborn! I could relate, although I never went so far as to cross the 520. (Would she do it now that it's a toll bridge??) And of course I appreciated her honesty about miscarriage, a subject that still carries taboo and secrecy.
