Book Description

January 1, 1994
“Why are so many of us at times completely baffled by a relationship?
How can we think we know someone so well and admit in the end that we hardly knew that person at all?
Why do many people who work diligently and strenuously to gain wholeness and balance still feel so frustrated about having a fulfilling relationship?
Why have so many people given up on love?”
—from the Prologue

John Bradshaw’s bestselling books and compelling PBS series have touched and changed millions of lives. Now, in Creating Love, he offers us a new way to understand our most crucial relationships—with our romantic partners and spouses, with our parents and children, with friends and co-workers, with ourselves, and with God.

Bradshaw’s compassionate approach shows that many of us have been literally “entranced” by past experiences of counterfeit love, so we unknowingly re-create patterns that can never fulfill us. Here he provides both the insights and the precise tools we need to keep those destructive patterns from repeating in the present. And then he shows how we can open ourselves to the soul-building work of real love—and create healthy, loving relationships where we can be fully ourselves in every part of our lives.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Bradshaw's practical, often profound guide to building healthy, loving relationships was a seven-week PW bestseller.

From the Publisher

"In Creating Love, John Bradsgaw provides a new way to understand our most crucial relationships: with parents and children, with friends and co-workers, with ourselves, and with God.

He shows us how we have been literally "entranced" by past experiences of counterfeit love, how we can break these destructive patterns, and how we can open ourselves to the soul-building work of real love.

John Bradshaw has touched and changed millions of lives through his nationally televised PBS series and his best-selling books. His previous book, Homecoming, introduced the concept of the inner child to a vast new audience. Now he defines the "next great stage of growth"--how we can work to create healthy, loving relationships in every part of our lives.

Written for everyone who has struggled with painful relationships and is seeking hope and a new direction, Creating Love is a life-changing book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best yet, September 3, 1999

The style of this book surpasses anything that Mr. Bradshaw has written. In other words, although his other books are nice, his writing style is not fluent. He must have had help perhaps, but this one flows fluently. The quality of the material is earth shattering. Very few books have I read from cover to cover within a week and this one I did. This is something I can go over and over.

5.0 out of 5 stars The John Bradshaw Series on Personal Growth especially Creating Love, January 5, 2011

The Bradshaw series on "The Family"; continuing on through the work "Creating Love"; are stellar
in their impact on the individual's understanding of and becoming your authentic self.
These are the greatest written resources on uncovering codependent behavior
and discovering freedom of thought and getting in touch with your true emotions
along with identifying the behaviors that you wish to change, discover or abandon.
I recommend all the video and books in his series on self actualization.

One thing throughout these works is that they continually talk about the issue of codependence
but don't talk about it's healthy antonym which is not independence - so I'm told.
It is 'Interdependence' which should be of a functional and healthy nature especially when
functioning among teams in the workplace, sports or family. Learing these dynamics
can also so make you aware when you are being manipulated or identify when you are
doing things for the wrong reasons.

In addition I would also recommend Virginia Satire on "Self- Esteem", David Burns on "Feeling Good"
"Adult Children of Abusive Parents" by Farmer and "Of Course Your Angry" by Rosellini and
all works by Joseph Campbell. - Paul F. Kisak

4.0 out of 5 stars Creating the love you want, April 20, 2009

This review is from: Creating Love: The Next Great Stage of Growth (Paperback)
I have not read all of this but what I have read is very helpful about understanding dynamics of why we continue to live our lives in the past, though we may not know it. He is coming from a place of exposing the shame element and people who come from or understand the 12 step programs will recognize his way of demystifying pain and shame. He is a gentle caring soul who really wants us to understand and reveal ourselves TO ourselves and then be able to move on.
