Picturesque America was a 30 part series of 24 page "magazines", 15x11 inches in size. Printed on heavy stock paper, the series consists of 1 steel and numerous wood engravings in each volume. In the 1800s artists traveled all over the US and made "pictorial illustrations of the greater part of the north American continent" (publishers description). I inherited a set and am amazed at the hundreds of hand drawn scenes of Yosemite to Niagara Falls and so much in between. This book told the interesting story (to me, anyway) of how the whole thing came about. Every one I show the pictures to are amazed at the quality and artistry of the drawings. I cannot believe this set is so unknown.
