Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

A soft, easily carved stone that polishes beautifully, soapstone is a favorite medium of ethnic carvers, most notably the Inuit of North America. Easily obtained, it can be worked with very few special tools. Swiss sculptor Haberstich gives an overview of the worldwide uses of soapstone, with full-color photos of soapstone samples from many countries. Following general instructions for working and shaping the stone, there are step-by-step projects for jewelry, desk sets, household items, and figures. A gallery of artists' works provides additional ideas. This is a useful book covering a somewhat unusual subject.

Well, after purchasing about 50 pounds of soapstone I thought to look for a book on the art of carving it to help me get started. This little book is packed with great info and ideas to help the "first time carver" with the basic how-to to get going. Good one to keep in your collection!

This book helps to get you over the first time carvers jitters. I found it very informational, and got a lot of ideas.

2.0 out of 5 stars missing basic information, July 15, 2002

I have some excellent Lark books on ceramics, but this book was a disappointment. There is no almost no discussion of the potentially serious health hazards of working with soapstone (rock dust, asbestos) and how to minimize risks. The project directions are somewhat repetitive. A more indepth discussion of the geology and history of soapstone would have been interesting. Information on sources of carving stone and tools would have been useful.
