4.0 out of 5 stars A little misleading, but very informative.
The book has numerous spelling errors, has a misleading title, and seems to be another marketing tool for Jon Cataudella's Web-Store. However, it offers a great introduction and overall picture of Online businesses. If you can ignore the obvious advertising and editing problems than is definitely worth the money. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good but Limited
I was hoping that this book would be a "how-to create a web store" reference. It answered many of my questions, but did not cover enough material and is not a "how-to" manual really. If anything its a good overview towards taking your first steps to setting up an e-commerce site.

However, it offers a great introduction and overall picture of Online businesses. If you can ignore the obvious advertising and editing problems than is definitely worth the money. The book will point you on the right direction in starting an Online store. It does not offer any in-depth information in any specific subject but that's necessary in order to cover as many subjects as this book does.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Overall getting started book but lacks depth, February 3, 2000
This is an excellent book that I would recommend for everyone interested in putting a store on the web. However it is NOT a book that explains the actual site design aspect of making your own store. I assumed this would show how to make a store from the site designer's stand point, and this is book only covers what the store owner needs to to do get started.... It is a great book if you want to setup a store for your business, but if you are looking for a book to actually tell you how to add and setup the code or software that runs the e-commerce part of the web site, this is the wrong book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "must read" book for online entrepreneurs., April 5, 2000
The second edition of Creating Stores On The Web by Ben Swayer, et.al (is even more valuable: it provides many basics on online selling options, from using Amazon zshops and Yahoo Store to setting up an individual site. An invaluable 'must', this answers questions ranging from accepting international payments and tracking shipping costs to accepting credit cards online.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Intro!!!!, May 28, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Creating Stores on the Web (Paperback)
Of the fifteen or so books I looked into, I found this to be the most direct and comprehensive description of "what to expect". The work outlines the general business steps involved in getting started with e-commerce (lawyers, merchant accounts, etc). It covers the actual website and HTML in non-specific introductory form. This is the first book that you should read if you're an e-commerce beginner....

Well written and helpful....

5.0 out of 5 stars The whole package, February 13, 2000
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Creating Stores on the Web (Paperback)
This book was the best. Most books on e-commerce are either too high-tech or too low-tech, this book was just right. Most of my experiece is in intranet development but I recently aquired a position where I am in charge of developing an on-line gift shop for a major academic institution. Not having any retail experience I needed something that would give the business and marketing perspective as well as the technical perspective of developing on-line stores. This book is worth every penny and more, and even though it was originally published in 1998 the topics and technoligies covered are still very relevant in Feb 2000. This book should be a staple of every web developers professional library, whether involved in E-Commerce or not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creating Stores on the Web, Second Edition, March 7, 2001

Dana Dwyer (Green Bay, WI USA) - See all my reviews
If you are interested in finding information on the wide range of knowlege required to be a successful web store owner, this book is a great place to start.

This book is co-authored by a man who started a fledgling web-based business in 1993. Through his experience and successes you get all the tools you need to make informed decisions on your web design. You can go to his website and see that all the ideas he outlines for you in the book are in practice on his website.

I am a computer technician who is researching starting my own web based business to sell custom framed wedding invitations. I have read many books and articles in my research. I found this book and one other to be an incredible asset (101 Ways to Promote your Web Site). Both these books are written in "lay-mans" terms that any beginner would be able to understand.

A must have for anyone who wants to know where to start with creating their own web-based business.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Paperback Consulting Teams Around!, August 23, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Creating Stores on the Web (Paperback)
Today more and more people are going online to market their products and services. Their goals are the same - being successful at what they do. Unfortunately, many of us have seen some bad examples of Websites that failed to effectively market as they were intended to do. Cataudella, Sawyer, and Greely (a law firm?), wrote Creating Stores on the Web to offer readers detailed instruction on how to set up actual stores on the Internet and keep them running smoothly.

This book is a comprehensive and very practical guide to understanding how online stores should operate. Rather than supplying HTML programming information (plenty of good books already do this), the authors are primarily concerned about the actual contents, appearance, operation, and promotion that will appeal to online shoppers. After all, the bottom line is selling!

The authors provide an abundance of important information, including hundreds of do's and don'ts about retailing on the Web, how to set up shop, online retail planning and strategies, how to find customers online, how to advertise, market, and promote stores, how to process payments, inventory management, legal issues, and some of the best software to use. Real-life examples are provided to support instruction and advice given throughout the book.

This book offers honest answers and advice in operating a store online. For instance, as in all areas of life, problems do surface in the business world. The Internet is a good example. Sometimes things just don't work out the way we would like them to. I was impressed with the clever but honest approaches offered to deal with problem situations. For example, should inventory of an item be unavailable, online store operators could creatively (and legitimately), encourage their customers to consider another item that is available. This and other creative advice can be quite timely and save the face and existence of any business!

The authors provide some good listings of resources that will assist online store owners. Resources include magazines, business Websites, research firms, graphics, and software programs to meet every need. While these listings are by no means complete they will help direct store owners in the right direction! To their credit the authors also recommend other books that will aid online store owners!

We have heard of how many companies have gone down the tubes for one reason or another. Don't let this happen to you! This book serves as an excellent online store business guide. Put its team of authors to work for you as your own private business consultants! Very imformative! Highly recommended!
