Book Description

September 1999
We all have a future we care about, whether it is the next year, the next decade, or even far off, after we are gone. Controlling that future is as simple as imagining it in detail and constructing a bridge of enabling goals to achieve it. By daring readers to dream and plan, CREATING YOUR FUTURE will open them up to new and creative possibilities; by creating a structured vision of where they are headed, readers will discover that they are suddenly free to be more spontaneous and present in their daily lives. A motivational road map for getting the most out of life, this five-step program - Commit, Create, Construct, Carry Out, and Celebrate - invites readers to participate fully with the book, to reflect, to revise, and ultimately to visualize and live a more meaningful and deeply fulfilling life.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"Most people spend more time planning their next vacation than they do planning the rest of their lives," says Dave Ellis in Creating Your Future. Yet one of the most powerful paths to creating the future you want is choosing it. You achieve this by setting long-term goals based on a long-range vision. This book shows you the process, with activities that prompt you to write your goals, then follow these five steps:
  1. Commit to creating your future.
  2. Create a vision of your future.
  3. Construct a plan to fulfill your vision.
  4. Carry out your plan.
  5. Celebrate what you've done and continue creating your future.
Each step has its own chapter with many, varied exercises--mental, written, and active--to help you achieve that step. For example, the "Carry Out Your Plan" chapter describes 22 strategies that help you become the person you want to be and turn your goals into reality. This book won't be a quick skim--there's work to do as you read each chapter, in order to get the most from Ellis's process. You'll emerge much more knowledgeable about yourself and your goals, with a good start along the path to the future you want. --Joan Price --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Publishers Weekly

Ellis (Becoming a Master Student) offers a clear, detailed method to "thoughtfully choose what you want to do, have, and be during your life." He contends that people can create (rather than merely react to) circumstances by using "long-range vision," goal setting, prioritizing, planning and visualizing changes on personal, group and even global levels. From losing weight to ending hunger, increasing sales to buying a new car, clear goals are set, written, spoken and broken down into small steps toward their achievement. Employing 3x5 cards, pictures, tape recordings, lists and even songs, Ellis's idea is to "fill your conversation space" with more of the desired future instead of the usual regrets or resentments for the past and worries or predictions about the future. The author advises readers to take control of their "writing, speaking, listening, reading, and thinking," in order to "commit, create, construct, carry out, and celebrate" the loftiest dreams they can imagine. Ellis commits what many may deem a few blunders along the way, disregarding such formidable obstacles as addictions or childhood traumas, denouncing therapy and offering simplistic "will power" answers for complex and difficult issues. Overall, however, he provides a useful guide to long-term thinking and goal-oriented living. Author tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional roadmap towards achieving your dreams, September 22, 1998
Wonderfully written!! This is a book you will actually "use" because this is not a "passive", leisurely, read. As the reader, you will become thoroughly involved in charting the course your life will take. Visualizing and putting to paper, "with a pencil on 3X5 index cards", your aspirations revives the mind and rekindles in all of us what it is we really want and why. Why a pencil? To modify and update your goals. And the index cards? Easy way to catalog, reference and review them. For anyone interested in attaining their goals, this book is an excellent source in getting you pointed in the right direction. Reading and applying the principles within will make the journey worthwhile.
