Finally, a book that gets beyond the academic theories that abound about why work/life balance is a problem or what the "demographics" are. Yes, we already know this is a problem! What I liked about the book is it focuses on solutions. Authors offer realistic suggestions and practical exercises. Book is nicely organized in a logical progression to achieve end balance. Also, the numerous anecdotes are good "evidence" and make the book more readable. Overall, excellent aid to help achieve what so many of us find difficult to reach. I strongly recommend this book.

I loved this book. It really helps you focus on the issues - the REAL issues - behind imbalance in your life and then guides you in the process of creating REAL solutions. The wonderful thing about Life Collage is that it guides the reader through simple, yet powerful exercises to help you change your life. It is thought-provoking and comprehensive, and it can help people at any stage or level in their career. I'd recommend this to all my friends who work, and all those who don't but have ever considered the alternative.

Typically self help books leave me cold, don't speak to me. But this book screamed my name, my story and the names and stories of all my friends. Clearly the concept of work vs. life is broken in today's world. And this book goes about teaching us all how to make changes and create a more well-rounded existence. I'm recommending it to everyone I know. The stories are inspiring snapshots about real people who sought real solutions. The exercises will help each person craft her own answers. This book truly presents 21st century solutions for a 21st century problem!

This book is a realistic look at the challenges working women face. Even though I'm not looking to make major changes in life right now, I found this helpful to read and think through because I find it important and useful to periodically review my life and make sure I understand where I am and who I am in life at a given point in time. Several of the worksheets and assessment items are things I will find useful to use in my current job.

My one concern about the book is that I wish the examples of women interviewed had included a few who were not executives or women in positions of power. Women who are in positions of less influence and power also face the same issues and need to know that they too have options and to tell their story.

Overall, I'd recommend this for anyone serious about reviewing the work/life dilemma.

This is the fourth book of this genre I've purchased within the last month. The oldest (2000) but by far the most helpful of the lot. Some authors ask you to make timelines of the major highs and lows (I was depressed for the rest of the day) and others tell you to describe your perfect job scenario (okay, now what?) I'm mid-life career transitioning, not starting out. This one covers aspects that were helpful for me: from assessing finances, dealing with emotions, job & identity issues, creating support system, to getting quiet and creating a space to 'hear' the next step. Compassionate and knowledgeably written (the authors themselves career transitioners/changers) and backed up with research and interviews w/(1000) women who've made the leap from stressful, jobs they hated, to lives of balance and fulfilment. If you're considering a change in your lifestyle/work equation, get this one first! There'll be plenty of kleenex left for the timeline...

I am only halfway through this book right now, but am so happy to see that I am not the only person who has had irrational thoughts such as "If I drive into that tree right now, I could be in the hospital now instead of going to work, and being in the hospital would be better than going into my job!" The work-life dilemma affects us all in different and crazy ways! Also, the book stresses that life is a constantly changing journey, and the next change you make will not be the last, so you shouldn't stress out too much about making a move. I am sure this book will help me to focus on what I really want to do, and is already giving me the courage to make a change.

This is a book every women must read! Because every woman at one point in her life is going to feel the need for change. Even if you are gloriously happy with your career and life at this exact moment, things change, it's inevitable! Learning how to make the right choices for yourself is an excellent tool for any person at any age. Just as every individual is unique, so are their choices on how to "collage" their life to be happy are unique as well. This book dares you to examine your life, the choices you have made, and how to make smarter decisions in the future. It also reminds you that success is not a destination, but a journey!(A plaque I have written in my kitchen). This book would make an excellent gift not only to yourself but to any friend or relative, especially female, especially those who may be in need of a little advice concerning life's dilemmas. Do you, for instance begin most conversations with "Sorry I didn't call you back sooner, but I've been so busy"; feel constantly tired; buy yourself lots of little treats "because you deserve it"; have no wish to be considered for your boss' job? The authors show you how to create a "conscious life collage", in which you choose only those aspects of your life you treasure, and assemble them into your own, workable design.

I have the pleasure of working with Kathy McDonald on a committee for the National Association of Women Businessowners - so it does not surprise me that she has crafted a truly insightful book for women who need help balancing their professional and personal lives. I have witnessed how skillfully Kathy balances hers - while still giving back to the women's business community through her volunteer efforts.
