Book Description

December 31, 1996
It's a well-known fact that beads have been an integral part of societies for millennia. But did you know that certain beadweaving stitches have existed since the Egyptians? All of the classic stitches for the craft are explained here: peyote, brick, square, right-angle weave, African helix, netting, and chevron chain. Illustrations and detailed explanations make each one astonishingly simple to master. Go beyond the traditional to create three-dimensional objects--bowls, baskets, and figures--in addition to jewelry and accessories. See how to attach fringe, work the outside edge, and add spacer beads. Apply the techniques to 20 projects, ranging from simple brick-stitch "Ear Rings" of Saturn, to a handsome peyote-weave basket, to a gorgeous Maui Evening Bag in gold, ivory, and teal. A gallery of 100 color photos displays some of the best work done by contemporary bead artists, from a funky, richly colored cuffed basket to a fabulously beautiful gilded cage. Packed with information and inspiration, it's sure to become the beadwork bible. 144 pages, 150 color illus., 250 b/w illus., 8 1/2 x 10. NEW IN PAPERBACK

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Go beyond simply stringing beads together--learn to weave them into beautiful textural patterns to create jewelry, bowls, baskets, purses, and even sculpture. With the step-by-step instructions and detailed diagrams in this guide, the seven stitches (peyote, brick, square, right angle, African helix, netting, and chevron chain) and their variations aren't terribly difficult to learn. Although they may take patience and some time to master, even the beginner can produce simple, attractive pieces. Beaders with more experience will be inspired to new heights of invention upon viewing the full-color gallery of spectacular bead weaving creations contributed by various artists to this attractive book. --Amy Handy --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars First on Your List, October 4, 2000

If you buy just one book on beading, buy this one. If you are a serious beader, buy this one first. It's practical, clear, well-written, well-designed, has precise directions to many stitches and their flat, round, and tubular versions, and is the first book to reach for when you don't understand, want to understand, or want comfort in seeing the lovingly photographed, equisite work of beadmasters.

This book has some of the clearest directions for various techniques of beadweaving that I have ever seen. The charts and diagrams are marvelous, and the projects that are included with each stitch technique range from easy for a beginner to challenging for more seasoned beaders. This is one book I would not want to do without. When somebody asks me which beading book they should buy to learn how to bead, I always recommend this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Off loom beading must have, July 27, 2001
By A Customer
This book is the best book for off loom bead work. It is extremely helpful. Well written and very good instructions on each stitch covered. Not only that but wonderful projects to do to help you learn the stitch even better. I found that these projects were much more to my liking than most projects in other books. I have completed most of them and I credit this bool with helping me the most. This is a must have book especially for self teaching beaders like myself. I can't express how much this book assisted me in learning the off loom stitches. This book didn't frustrate me as most other publications that I've read did. A stellsr book deserving of 10 stars.
