About the Author

Heather Wright-Porto holds a master s degree in computer information systems and has had her own computer consulting company, Premier Computer Solutions, since 1995. She has trained clients on Microsoft Office, as well as Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, and other graphic design applications, in addition to developing databases (using Microsoft Access, Microsoft SQL Server, and Oracle), programming in Visual Basic, and creating websites (using ColdFusion, HTML, and JavaScript). She also worked at New York University's School of Medicine as a senior database developer for more than nine years. In November 2009, her focus shifted to expanding and building her Blogs by Heather business ( In July 2010, she published her first book, Beginning Google Blogger, and in the fall of 2010 began writing her second, Creative Blogging.

Heather enjoys writing and sharing her blogging knowledge and experience with her readers. She hopes to continue writing technical books and maybe will even write a children's book someday. Her days are also filled with raising her young family, Luke and Michaela.

As a creative outlet and for her love of art, she became a Stampin Up! Demonstrator in October 2006. She is what is considered a hobby demonstrator, but enjoys making and selling cards at local shops, holding child and adult craft programs at local libraries, as well as workshops at her home with customers, friends and family.

Heather is easygoing, but very ambitious and detailed-oriented (how does that combination work?). She gets great enjoyment in helping others and more so in making people smile. She is blessed and fortunate to have the life she has, and to be surrounded by a loving family and wonderful people.

I've followed Heather Wright-Porto's blog for quite some time. Through her blog, she's provided a treasure trove of tips and techniques on how to create blogs so when I found out she was publishing this book, I ordered it!

The key reason this book stands out from ALL THE REST of the blogging books is that it contains detailed instructions using EACH of the three major blogging platforms (Blogger, Typepad and WordPress). It's like getting three books in one!

The book is well organized with many screen shots, examples and easy to follow step-by-step instructions written with just the right balance of details without getting too technical.

Each chapter starts with a review of what's been covered in the previous chapter, a summary of what will be covered in the current chapter, and exercises along the way highlighting examples of particular interest. There' a chapter on Social Network integration (using widgets and such) as well as how to set up your domain name and the steps to take to publish your content. In the back section, there are trouble-shooting tips, extensive list of online resources and some information about basic HTML/CSS. There's even a place where you can go online to download the source code mentioned in the book.

In reading this book, I learned about the subtle differences within each of the blogging platforms. I can only imagine the amount of research and work that went into creating this book. Job well done!

This is clearly one of my favorite reference books. I feel confident that I can now create a blog using any of the platforms (as long as I have this book close at hand)!

I was so thrilled to see this book by Heather Wright-Porto that I snatched it right away in the Kindle format. This book is loaded with lots of options and ideas to consider when first venturing out to create your own blog. Although I've been blogging for several years, there are lots of great tidbits that I'm picking up. Another item that I find helpful is it has Blogger, Typepad and WordPress instruction throughout the book, as well as PC and Mac instruction. THANK YOU Heather!

Creative Blogging -Your First Steps To A
Successful Blog explains how to build a
website, name it, develop content, utilize
templates, develop a profile and drive traffic
to your site.

Heather Wright Porto shows how to work with
the HTML to build a website with simple examples
and existing internet resources. HTML is the
markup language used for creating documents
on the World Wide Web. HTML elements are
the basic building-blocks of webpages.

Once the user is comfortable with formulating the HTML,
the next step is to develop a name for the blog and a
purpose that will resonate with the general public.
The blog should have good content, correct spelling,
a clear focus and the use of key words and phrases
that are known commonly in user circles.

Color is important for the site. Red is intense.
Green is associated with nature and life itself
while gray is formal. Brown is earthy and sky
blue is heavenly.

The free web templates presented are easy to download
and are meant to make a website building process
absolutely hassle free for beginners and professionals
alike. Free templates in spite of their zero tags
have been created by professionals and are absolutely
editable, as well as easy to install. Heather Wright
Porto explains how to do so. (freetemplatesonline)

Next, a descriptive profile is very important so
that users will have relevent information on the
originator(s) of the blog. A site can be added
to Google by invoking Google's "addurl". The rank
may be improved by utilizing Google's
