5.0 out of 5 stars Think you know black & white?
This is a great guide book for folks who want to know about the various "shades" of B&W. Really great explanations and images of many different approaches to B&W beyond simply desaturating an image. Many of the techniques included mimic the old darkroom techniques that were seeming lost when we went digital.

Included are reference to actions and plug-ins...

3.0 out of 5 stars Plug in manual
I looked through this book quickly at a local bookstore and it had a lot of really nice looking photos inside, that I thought would be inspiring for my own imagination. I bought it,...mistake. Like the other reviews mentioned, once you get inside this book, it is all about using plug-ins. Very disappointing. I did enjoy the photos, and they do make you think, but it is...

Many of the techniques included mimic the old darkroom techniques that were seeming lost when we went digital.

Included are reference to actions and plug-ins (both free and $$) that can help you create effects that make your photos come to life without sloshing thru a variety of chemicals in a small dark room.

Striking images is right on.

2.0 out of 5 stars A guide to plug-ins and actions, April 16, 2009

I borrowed this book from my public library before purchasing and boy am I glad I did. The book and its pictures look great at first glance but once you get into it you see it's all about using various Photoshop plug-ins and actions that the author happily tells you were to find them. If you are looking to create some dramatic effects on your own from scratch I would suggest you look elsewhere. But if plugins are your game still look elsewhere, there are tons of websites that provide just as much if not more information for free.

Then of course there is always your local public library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Flashy But Shallow, March 17, 2009

This is a flashy, colorful book containing good looking photos (many of cars). It could have been titled "How To Buy Plug-ins For Photoshop." Many of the techniques described use 'Plug-ins" and Farce tells you where to buy them. The descriptions of implementation and potential is rudementry and shallow. If you're looking for an instructional manual to improve you expertise with the tools you own, this isn't the book. I suggest Freeman's 'Mastering B&W..' If you have extra bucks to spend and play around, this is the catalog to find what you need.

Joe's book rocks. Even though I teach Photoshop, photography and plug-ins, I learned a lot from this beautifully illustrated book, which is packed with great ideas for creative inspiration.

Joe's easy-to-follow style makes him one of my digital darkroom heros.
