About the Author

Sheree Clark and Wendy Lyons have worked together on several projects over the years, but Creative Direct Mail Design is the first book they've co-authored.

Sheree Clark is a native of Saratoga Springs, New York. Since 1985, she has been a principal of Sayles Graphic Design in Des Moines, Iowa. She has written numerous articles for graphic arts trade publications and published her first book in 1984--a history project for Drake University. Clark holds a B.S. in Retail Marketing from Rochester Institute of Technology and a master's degree from the University of Vermont. Clark's passion for design extends to her free time activities: she collects art deco compacts and jewelry, Lucite handbags, and industrial design and packaging from the 1930s.

Growing up in the small town of Eldridge, Iowa, Wendy Lyons wrote her first poem at age 4. "Yes, it was about farm animals," she laughs. Lyons enjoys writing everything from poetry to direct mail copy to books and articles on graphic design. As copywriter for Sayles Graphic Design, she has an extensive background in writing direct mail campaigns for clients nation-wide. Lyons holds a B.S. in Radio/Television from Kansas State University and is an accomplshed television commercial and corporate video writer/producer. When she's not writing, Lyons enjoys heirloom flower garedning and collecting Victorian antiques. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book for Designers!, August 29, 1999

Creative Direct Mail Design is a book I keep coming back to again and again. When I get stuck for an idea, or I'm looking for something different to try, this book is the one I open first. Clark and Lyons have put together a great reference book filled with wonderful examples of direct mail. The diversity and creativity of these many designs are always inspiring. Each section begins with a showcase of one standout design piece and the story behind it. And with each chapter there is a tips section the authors have put together which is filled with things you should know, have known but probably forgotten, and a few you haven't thought of. I've had this book for three years now, and it's still one of the best design reference books I've got.

2.0 out of 5 stars I expected more..., May 28, 2001

Hi. In my opinion, if you are interested in looking at a lot of great photo's of direct mail and someone telling you some pretty obvious stuff like, "Plan ahead!" or "Think Big!" then this is for you. I was very disappointed at the lack of "GUIDE;" for example, one chapter notes, "Pay attention to postal regulations..." and then never talks about ANYTHING regarding them! I found that the elements missing were: identifying industry standards like package names, sizes, etc; a glossary of direct mail terminology; and especially what to expect pricewise. Overall, not for me or anyone desirous of actually learning something about direct mail.
