4.0 out of 5 stars interesting simple vintage style, October 16, 2005

This review is from: Creative Dressing: The Unique Collection of Top Designer Looks That You Can Make Yourself (Hardcover)
I bought this book second hand, for about US $3. At this price I am happy with my purchase, which will be used to help design and make theatrical costumes, and for my daughter to make herself some vintage-style fashion. About half the book is knitting patterns (on which I do not have the skills to comment). The other half are sewn garment patterns, presented on graph paper with instructions for scaling up. The styles are classic late-1970's ethnic inspired fashion. These include; basic mock-kimono, poncho top and skirt, Balinese trousers, Indochinese jacket, Ottoman Kusak Dressing Gown, Indian shirt dress, fabric shoulder bag, Singapore Pyjamas, Tartar Khalat Coat (i will make this for myself as well), Chinese jacket and side slit skirt and Translyvanian Peasant Shirt. Then there are more fashion-oriented garments by contemporary designers like Bruce Oldfield; these would be suitable for anyone wanting to make simple 1970's style clothes for evening or day; a sheath dress, long evening dress, T shirt dress, bodysuit, a great spiral cut sundress, a wedding dress from the designer of Princess Anne's wedding dress (not sure that's a recommendation)and then, strangely, four historically-inspired mock-reproduction nightgowns - Henry III, Victorian, and a couple they call Shepherdess and Althea - think kind of historical mish-mash, but you could as generic "middle ages" gowns for junior-school plays with them. All patterns have sewing instructions; these seem OK but havn't closely examined all of them. A good book for a sewer interested in vintage stle - if you see it cheaply I'd suggest you grab it.
