This is a truly remarkable EP. It marks the point when Cave-In began to part with their metalcore roots and develop their Jupiter-era sound. The first song, Luminance finds them somewhere in between the styles on Until Your Heart stops and Jupiter. The vocals are still raw and the riffs are angular and heavy, but the music has more of a tripped out progressive vibe. The first verse is so intense it defies explaination. I wish Cave-In had done a whole album like this, it's one of the best songs they have written. The segue tracks or 'sonatas' are cool but I find myself skipping over them as they seem to be there mostly just to create a sense of atmosphere for the album and don't really go anywhere by themselves. The Failure cover is cool and indicates the more pop/alternative rock direction they would eventually explore with the Antenna album. I'm not a huge Failure fan but they pull off the cover very well. And the short acoustic track Burning Down the Billboards is a real surprise as it sounds nothing like the rest of the band's material. It's a nice juxtaposition between the calm folk-influenced music and the anarchistic lyrics. All in all, this is a great EP, and essential for any fan of this talented and multifaceted group of musicians.

Brief little snapshot in the hardcore-turned melodic rock band's history. With only one real standout track (1) followed by the progressively uninspired and stereotypical different "genre nods" (2-5), the creativity found here does not eclipse much worth purchasing.

This was a sort of soul-searching album, you could say. It's the band out to find themselves (which they certainly did, as this led to the Jupiter album).

It's an outstanding album for Cave In fans. The band tries new things, from a fairly straightforward Failure cover to more exploratory "Sonata's." If you love modern Cave In it's a great way to see how they became what they are, and if you hate modern Cave In it's a great way to see why they drifted from their roots.

If you aren't already a Cave In fan, though, don't start here. Start on Jupiter, you'll thank yourself.

A mix of Failure and Led Zeppelin, a modern day Pink Floyd-Yes, it's difficult to describe the unique, rocking sound of this Boston quartet, but to their true fans, they are simply known as "Space-Rock". Cave In is the first in what may be the next biggest trend in music. They have been inspiring bands for years, and will continue to do so with their major label on RCA Records (out March 18th) titled Antenna. This cd showcases Cave In at their finest spaced out point. From the rocking Failure Cover "Magnified" to what sounds like a Beatles/Simon and Garfunkel inspired "Burning Down The Billboards", Cave In demonstrates how easily they can transpire from one musical category to the next. With guitars that relax and move you at the same time (especially when demonstrated on the instrumenal 'Sonata' tracks), this cd will leave you wanting more and more. Singer and guitarist Stephen Brodsky leads the band with choruses that inspire, and he soothes your soul at other times with his serene vocals and impressive lyrics. His harmonies can be compared to such legends as the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Simon and Garfunkel, and Rush-but don't let that fool you. This band is by far not like anything you have heard before. Personal favorites include the rockin' "Magnified" and "Luminance", a track which seemed to mark the beginning of their space-rock sound. This AMAZING Space Rock EP will leave you wanting all the Cave In you can handle!!! Fans of Pink Floyd, Rush, Failure, The Strokes, Foo Fighters, Sparta, Led Zeppelin, and At The Drive In (to name a few) will LOVE this band.

Cave-In's change in direction from grindcore to spaced out indie rock is documented in this 5 song collection. Track 1, 'Luminance' is closest to what the bands future direction would be as it is longer, the vocals are audible and it showcases slower tempo's and more experimentation. 'Sonata McGrath' and 'Sonata Brodsky' are both electro-fueled instrumentals that utilize a whoozy ambient influence as compliments to the album. The cover of Failure's 'Magnified' isn't comparable with old material yet still holds an edge over new material. Of course the real treat of "Creative Eclipses" is 'Burning Down the Billboards' which is an accoustic track that sounds like a cross between The Beatles circa '65 and the Velvet Underground. If you are a fan of "Jupiter" but don't want to wait for their major label debut, i reccomend seeking out this soon-to-be rare gem in the Cave-In discography.
