Book Description

The Art of Crafts September 1, 1999
There is no need to spend a fortune on fabric, threads, and other items in order to learn creative embroidery. With a few materials, Dilys Blackburn shows the reader how to design and complete a piece of embroidery from the start. Taking it step-by-step, learning stitches and other techniques, and exploring the use of color, the reader is taught skills in both stitching and design. By reading through the manual and carrying out the exercises, readers learn such diverse techniques as basic stitching, adding texture, simple fabric painting, quilting, cutwork, and Jacobean embroidery.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

British embroiderer Blackburn has taught creative embroidery for many years and especially enjoys working with beginning students of the art. This book distills the content of her classes and is an ideal textbook for the aspiring embroiderer working alone. Beginning with a chapter on simple stitches, she moves to "pure embroidery," which she defines as "the execution of neat stitching for the sake of the stitch, without the interruption of added fabrics or other techniques." Successive chapters cover Jacobean embroidery (crewel work), cut work, shadow work, quilting, texture and manipulation, design and presentation, design sources, and free-machine embroidery. Especially interesting are the chapters on painting fabric and on using gardens as inspiration for designing original pieces. Ideas for learning projects abound and are illustrated most effectively in full-color photographs. Highly recommended for large public library and academic textile collections.
