Book Description

October 1984
Unlike other dressage books, Creative Horsemanship does not teach a program but rather assumes a general knowledge and a degree of riding experience that can be enhanced by training suggestions from one of the foremost dressage teachers. This book is a response to the need to know more about the philosophy of classical riding and the reasons for the particular gymnastic movements involved.

Charles de Kunffy concentrates on the gymnastic development of a horse since this is basic to all equestrian achievements. He discusses what is meant by relaxation, obedience, suppleness, elasticity, and rhythm. And he addresses such topics as how to "dressage" a horse, communication between horse and rider, the purpose served by various aids, viewing and judging dressage, and competition. Mr. de Kunffy's selection of photographs of top American and European competitors reinforces his commentary.

Creative Horsemanship affirms that the horse and rider must develop together if the equestrian tradition, which represents an elegant sport and an art form of exquisite beauty, is to be maintained.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Charles de Kunffy, a native of Hungary, began riding at the age of seven and was coached by the finest European instructors. He successfully competed in Europe in jumping, combined eventing, and dressage, and was a member of the Hungarian Olympic Equestrian Team. A graduate of the University of California, Mr. de Kunffy is an internationally recognized teacher and coach, an AHSA licensed judge, a member of ~ the Judge's Committee, and served on the Educational Committee of the United States Dressage Foundation. He has achieved the high-st qualification for dressage judging, that of "I."

I was lucky enough to find it at a second hand shop. Being one of his earlier books, there is a wealth of info on all aspects of horsemanship, not just dressage. I am reading it intensely and finding new(well old) information that simplifies what classical horsemanship is, and about how to do it and more importantly Why! Like using your hands correctly, through to what constitutes the seat and using your boots (legs), I have his other books too, and this just backing up what he trying to get across. Another Classic Horseman that more people should read.

I purchased this book after reading his recent one ... this book was written some time ago but still has a great wealth of knowledge to be obtained by the reader. Have enjoyed making comparison between the writings and philosphys of both books.
