I bought these speakers to improve the quality of sound from my MacBook. I live in a small dorm room and use my computer for listening to music and watching movies. For the price, these speakers provide a clear listening experience while punching out enough bass. I listen to a lot of soundtracks and so appreciate hearing clarity on instrumental parts and also being able to feel bass in the loud dramatic portions. The speakers are so much better than my tinny laptop speakers. In listening to a Christopher Parkening CD, I could hear depth in the sound of the acoustic guitar that did not come through from those speakers. Sure, these aren't audiophile quality, but for the price they provide great sound for the average listener who wants to improve his computer sound. They don't take up much space; I have them set up on my small dorm room desk with the sub on a shelf above. The volume control is on a convenient small wired remote that lets you power on and off the speakers.

Cons: the audio cables could be longer from the speakers to the sub. I would have liked to set the sub on the floor instead of a shelf, but the length of the cables did not allow for this to happen comfortably the way my room is set up. There is no headphone jack (many comparably priced speaker systems offer one). The bass control is on the back of the sub and can be annoying to adjust depending on how you have them set up.

Honestly, these are minor issues for me, especially for the price. I'd recommend these to anyone on a budget.

Update: had to return these because of static coming from the left speaker

These speakers come nicely and securely packaged. There is only a quick setup guide but that's all that is needed. You plug the cord from the two satellite speakers into the subwoofer, and the cord from the subwoofer into the sound card of your computer (or line out jack of whatever device you want to use for the playback, like a portable CD or MP3 player). The cord from the subwoofer goes through the combo on/off switch and volume control and to the sound card jack.

The sound: No highs, no lows, it must be.. er, these speakers. Even though there is a sub, there is very little output. Perhaps it is because I put it on the floor. If I put it on the desk it would have been louder but it really is a bit large for the desktop. I could feel the downward-facing woofer moving, however. If you are looking for speakers that have good clarity of sound and good stereo imaging but do not require high fidelity, these are an excellent choice. Because of the emphasis on the midrange, sounds (such as voices, and musical instruments in that range like guitars) come through very clear and clean, albeit not that realistic since it is missing the bottom and top end of the frequencies. Personally, I like these much better than speakers that do nothing but thump out the bass and sound muddy.

[edit on 2/25/12] - Oops, I need to correct myself about the bass and the subwoofer. Dopey me did not notice the volume control for the sub, so when I tried it, it was set too low. Now I find that the bass is decent. It is not tight, low bass but what do you expect from something this size and price? It also tends to get boomy and muddy if turned up too high, but kept at a reasonable volume (like about 1/3 of the way up), it blends nicely with the speakers.

I did not have room for my old speakers at the sides of my new 25.5 inch monitor, so I bought these. The side speakers are small enough to lie horizontally under my monitor, and the woofer (sub-woofer is a ridiculous term for something this size) fits right behind the monitor. Since the speaker in the woofer cube is downward-firing, and the sound relatively omni-directional at these frequencies, it has no problem getting out from behind my monitor.

The sound is relatively wide-ranging and sounds quite good for my purposes, which is just as a PC monitor and watching a few TV shows, but it is not meant to be any sort of a major entertainment center. For that, it works quite well. But I improved the flatness of the frequency response by running the equalizer that is built in to Vista. First, plug in a microphone into the Mic input on your sound card, and place it on top of the chair in your normal listening position. I used a microphone that came with my stereo receiver, but had to boost the level by 20 dB in order to get enough output from the mike (choose the "Recording Devices" from the speaker icon in the tray for this). Be sure the microphone input is enabled also (no red icon in the "Microphone Properties/Levels" tab). Then, open "Playback Devices" from the speaker icon in the tray, highlight "Speakers", and select "Properties". Then select the "Enhancements" tab, and check the box for "Room correction". Finally, select "Settings", and it will output calibration tones to correct for the speaker and room acoustics. It works for me, and you get decent sound for a very cheap price.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
These Creative speakers were a nice upgrade from the basic speakers I had been running on my Dell for the last year and a half. I liked the small bass bin that really gave me a much richer and full sound in my computer nook at home.

They were set up rather easily. The biggest hassle was negotiating the rat's nest of wires already in place behind my computer desk. The satellites hooked into the bass unit and the bass plugged into my Dell Inspiron. I found the volume dongle to be an odd choice and would have preferred a straight up volume control on one of the speakers, but it wasn't any kind of deal breaker. The volume knob is easy enough to access and I appreciate the lighted indicator that shows when the speakers are on or off.

I first tried the speakers against a selection of music from my iTunes library. I played several selections ranging from soundtracks to modern pop. There was a decent bass response that won't be a threat to a Bose surround sound. But as I said earlier, this three piece Creative is a nice bump from the very basic Dell speakers that I had been using. I also dropped a movie into the DVD and let it play through the trailers and several selected scenes. Again, there was a nice range of sound with the roar of jets producing a nice rumble and the bright trumpet notes of the soundtrack being accurately reproduced.

While I wouldn't call them the best possible speakers on the market they are a very good value, especially at the price that they are commanding on Amazon. I could certainly see this rig turning a college student's laptop into the dorm room entertainment center. Nicely done, Creative. My Inspiron is now Inspired.
