This book is essential for any therapist working with children who are struggling with divorce. Clinicians will appreciate the creative, practical activities which can be used for individual, group and family sessions. A versatile and clinically useful resource that is sure to be one of your most used references.

Great Resource, a few repeats,
By Heather R. Thomas "Elementary Counselor" (Burton, MI United States) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (Paperback)
This book provides many interventions that are quick and easy to impliment, but provide a lot of content for counseling. I have a few of her other books and only a few of the interventions were familiar. I highly recommend this book.

Invaluable resource for helping kids in a divorce,
This review is from: Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (Paperback)
This book would not just be helpful for therapists but parents as well. Parents would find it helpful in learning how to help their children deal with the divorce. There is a great wealth of exercises provided to help children understand the emotional roller coaster of divorce. I use it not just for groups but also for individual kids as well. The exercises are presented as a worksheet but it is nicely done so kids are able to have the space needed to write on the handout as needed. There are drawing exercises, games, educational handouts, and stories to normalize the child's experience. Just reading the book helped me understand how difficult it would be for a child to witness their parents' divorce and struggle with the changes emotionally. The book also deals with family sessions which is useful for children to see how their parents relate even after divorced. I highly recommend this book as I really enjoyed reading this book as the material presented was clear cut, and easy to implement.

I have suggested that the therapists that I supervise add this great book to their collection. I am also using some of the hand-outs (with the author's permission) in a training that I am preparing for our entire staff. This book explains parameters and guidelines for practitioners to follow when working with children of divorce. In addition, Lowenstein provides a theoretical overview of the stages of divorce, how divorce impacts children and the psychological tasks of children when adjusting to their parents' divorce. The interaction activities to use with children are outright FANTASTIC! There are so many great ideas and so many positive suggestions to help children through their painful experience. I recommend this book and this author wholeheartedly. I suggest you also check out her Web site at: [...] I get the author's monthly newsletter with helpful ideas!

This book is an excellent resource for therapists!! It offers fun ideas and creative activities for each stage of therapy - from assessment to termination. I like Lowenstein's other books as well (Creative Interventiosn for troubled Children & Youth, More Creative Interventions for Trobuled Children and Youth) but I particularly like how this book focuses on a common issue - divorce.

This review is from: Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (Paperback)
This book includes interventions to build rapport with children, to address divorce-specific problems, to address emotional reactions and to encourage positive coping. I have used techniques from this book innumerable times. They engage children and help them learn to cope with the changes that are happening in their lives. One thing that sets this book apart from other technique-based books is that it also includes information to provide to parents about how to best support their children as well as theoretical information for the practitioner about the impact of divorce on the child. This book has been an invaluable addition to my professional library.I sometimes use these techniques in conjunction with reading stories with children about divorce, such as: Was It the Chocolate Pudding?: A Story For Little Kids About Divorce I Don't Want to Talk About It

Like other books by Liana Lowenstein, this book is full of ideas for therapeutic interventions with kids, groups, and families. I turn to her books often as I plan for sessions. I find that I frequently adapt an idea from the book to meet the specific needs of a child. My own creativity is inspired when perusing these interventions. There is some redundancy between books which is disappointing. Other books I recommend: Assessment and Treatment Activities for Children, Adolescents, and Families: Practitioners Share Their Most Effective Techniques, Creative Interventions for Troubled Children & Youth, and Paper Dolls and Paper Airplanes: Therapeutic Exercises for Sexually Traumatized Children.

I am a fairly new therapist so I am always seeking resources for sessions. I purchased this book to assist me with an influx of children of divorce and have definitely gotten my money's worth! The activities are fun, easy, and can be used for all ages. This is my 2nd Lowenstein book. I subscribe to her newsletters as well and am very fortunate for coming across this great resource.

Essential Resource,
This review is from: Creative Interventions for Children of Divorce (Paperback)
Lowenstein's books are full of practical interventions that answer the essential question all of my graduate play therapy students ask: "What should I do in session?" This book, in particular, contains a broad variety of activities to do with kids of different ages to process and problem-solve typical issues that arise in divorce situations. One of my favorite activities in this book is the "Feel Better Bag," in which you create a bag with the child that essentially becomes his or her coping skills toolbox. I love the empowering nature of this activity and how it allows us to teach kids mastery and agency in a developmentally appropriate way. I always recommend Lowenstein's books to my students and trainees, and their reviews are overwhelmingly positive. Thanks for another great resource!

It offers great activities to do with children to get them talking and it covers a lot of important information about children and divorce. Her materials are extremely useful for anyone working with children. Very practical.
