I have always loved Judy Martin's books because they are filled with such useful, practical, and excellent information...but this book is the best one yet! Her last book, The Block Book, was extraordinary, but this one is incredible. Judy has been making and designing quilts, and writing books for many years. In this one, she tells the reader exactly how to make and design quilts from beginning to end. She not only gives instruction on the mechanics of quiltmaking, but she tells what her thought process was as she designed each one. I always wondered what designers thought as they were inspired, and now I know! She gives instructions for 12 new designs and 15 variations on these designs. The reason I especially love this book is that it isn't teaching you how to make just one quilt, it gives you instruction and knowledge to make whatever quilt you want to make. If you have an idea for a design, you'll be able to make it with these easy-to-understand instructions. It's not only for beginners, it's for anyone who wants to have an excellent foundation for quiltmaking and designing. It's takes all the mystery out of the process. She gives instructions on how to rotary cut many shapes used in quiltmaking, how to calculate yardage, and gives lots and lots of suggestions on how to personalize your quilts and much more. This book is so much fun! She also explains the reasons why her methods work. It's written in a down-to-earth friendly manner that isn't at all intimidating. She shows you exactly what to do step by step, so that there's no way you can fail. She leaves nothing out! And it is a beautifully laid out book with strikingly vivid colors.Read more ›

The text in Judy Martin's Creative Pattern book is extremely well written and is very easy to understand. Every quilter should read the 7 Secrets of Sewing Success in this book. Judy's book inspires the quilter to have the confidence and knowledge to create a quilt. The Creative Pattern Book is a well organized book with lovely color and includes 12 patterns of quilts. Each of the 12 patterns have several variations showing details of the fabric, color and quilting. This book is one that you will use often as it has everything you want in a quilt book.

I've been a sewer for years and have just begun quilting. I've purchased several "how to" and pattern books by different authors in order to get a feel for the quilting and design process. Judy's book is THE BEST. It is very readable and all instructions are clearly written. Her tips on cutting and sewing pieces THAT FIT TOGETHER are easy and logical and make the piecing process foolproof. Her approach truly does empower a quilter. Hats off!

Finally, a quilt book that makes perfect sense! Of all the quilt books I've bought, this is the first one I sat down & actually read cover to cover. Judy Martin wrote this book in plain English & all of the questions I had were answered & understandable. This book has changed the way I quilt!

I must confess that I didn't make any quilts from this book. Instead I looked at her quilting designs and used them on quilts I made from other people's patterns. For example, I really like the spiral motif on page 126; and the really large spirals she used on quilts on pages 80-87.

Judy lays out her instructions diff than what I am use to going by but will pick them up quickly. I had borrowed a friends to thumb through and decided I need this book in my collection. We saw some of her quilts on display at the quilt museum in Paducah, KY. Very nice quilts.

I bought it for a specific pattern. Directions are in some kind of short hand. If you study it I'm sure it will make sense. However I believe it could have been done better. I feel like I am guessing,
Example 136 A (picture of a square) p. 16
Does this mean look at page sixteen to see how they should be cut.
I have other patterns. They read cut 8 2 1/2 strips width of fabric then cut strip into 136 2 1/2 in. squares.
Patterns are great. directions.....not so much.

I have to only give this book three stars. I am a beginner quilter, maybe an advanced beginner, and found this book to be repetitive. I actually bought the book for one certain quilt pattern, and for the price I was okay with that. Normally I like to get a little more bang for my buck. All in all though, out of 30 quilts I found three I plan to make. It does show how color choice and use can make a huge difference. The photos are awesome, the directions are clear and easy to follow. For that reason I would recommend this book. Not so sure it one I would want to keep on the reference shelf, but that is just my personal taste. I am sure that many quilter's would find this a must have book. I do not recommend this for a very new, just starting, quilter unless you have a friend or really helpful local quilt store to help you out from time to time.
