This review is from: Creative Process in Gestalt Therapy (Paperback)
I feel gestalt therapy is different from other therapies in many ways. The emphasis on personal freedom, the need for creative expression, the awareness of body sensations and movements, change as a form of growth, staying in the here and now, and most importantly the experiencing of oneself in the way they want to be experienced.
A gestalt therapist takes risks. He expresses the fullest of love for the patient, yet will make the client stand, show the client that he can stand and could always stand. It provokes the client to be aware of what they run from yet gives the client the ultimate decision whether they continue to run. This is all done through an experiment which can be as simple as making a client exaggerate a facial expression to something as complex as making the client get up and behave as the person they fear to be, yet want to be. Gestalt therapy focuses heavily on the clients fantasy's and how the clients are often not even aware of these fantasys. A client in a group may say "John doesn't like me" yet the therapist will say "That is your fantasy, John did not say that, look at John and tell me what you see in his face." This would be a form of a simple experiment to make the client more aware. This book shows the progression of such experiments which reiterates their importance in the here and now. This book contains ten chapters that really explain what gestalt therapy is and how it is applied. It talks about therapy as art rather than science, common mistakes therapists make, running groups etc. The book also has transcripts to illustrate key points to help the reader be aware of what is being done. There is no doubt, if one is interested in gestalt therapy, this is the first book they need to read in order to better understand what gestalt therapy is.
