I believe the writer only creates half the story, and that you complete it by bringing your imagination, experience, and heart to the tale. I am happy to share the journey with you.

I've written more than 20 novels, about 80 short stories, four children's books, some comic books, screenplays, and a couple of non-fiction books, as well as five collaborations with J.R. Rain. Many of my tales are based on supernatural legends from the Southern Appalachian Mountains, and I also write mystery and suspense thrillers that are most often compared to the work of Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

I've also published Liquid Fear and Chronic Fear with Amazon's Thomas & Mercer imprint and McFall with 47North, as well as a number of audiobooks and foreign translations. I love hearing from you, because you're the reason I do this, so let's connect! Learn more about my work at

This book made me want to cover my eyes and hide in the closet - but I couldn't put it down long enough. You won't find a typical ghost or haunted house story here. The plot is original and kept me on edge from start to finish. Scott Nicholson has a gift for breathing life into his words, inviting us to step into his characters' world and share their experiences. If you're looking for horror with substance, this is the one for you.

This is probably the shortest review I've written on any book so far, but "Creative Spirit" is easy to sum up in a few sentences, so here goes.

"Unputdownable" doesn't roll off the tongue so well for me, but that's just what it is. Wonderfully creepy are also great words to capture the essence of this book. For quite some time now I've been searching around for a book that would scare the living daylights out of me, as I am a big horror / paranormal fan, and don't scare easily. How lucky for me to have won a copy of "Creative Spirit" by Scott Nicholson for review!

Remember how haunted house stories used to be written? This book is just like that - although it's not just any haunted house, but something far more sinister. Voodoo, witchcraft, shockingly slow deaths, possession, and loads more hair-raising goodies are to be found right here. It contains all the elements a good old fashioned, spine chilling supernatural story should have.

I suppose I should mention what really adds to this book is good, solid characters with strong personalities, each with their own in depth background story; as well as medium to fast pacing of the storyline that builds up the suspense really well until you can take no more. The author hardly gives you enough time to catch your breath before launching into the next bloodcurdling twist!

I won't recommend you read this before turning off the lights though - you'll keep looking over your shoulder and hearing strange noises in the dark...
But don't say I didn't warn you!

WARNING: Not for the fainthearted.

A group of artists come to Korban House, in the North Carolina mountains, to take part in a six-week retreat. Korban House is an authentic piece of history - the owner stipulated in his will that the house and lands were to be kept in the same condition as they were when he died 150 years prior, falling from the widow's walk to his death on the blue moon in October. Included in the group are writers, painters, a sculptor, musicians and even a parapsychologist. Korban House is also said to be haunted - maybe that explains the mysterious woman in white that several of the guests see? Or the compulsion that several of the guests feel to work on their projects obsessively? And what will happen on the upcoming October blue moon - the first in 150 years?

This was an insanely creepy story, and the tension is kept high throughout the book. Twists and red herrings abound, and I was certainly surprised at the events that take place toward the end. The main characters in the story are very well developed, and the plot flows along smoothly. However, many of the sub-characters are not even named, or if they are, they are kept so far in the background that you don't learn anything about them. However, I'm not sure how they could have been developed without breaking into the flow of the plot; it just seemed like the place was overcrowded. That shouldn't stop you from reading this wonderfully scary book, though - highly recommended!

I was lured in by all the raving reviews. I found the book rather disappointing in comparison to the fantastic reviews it received. The story premice is creative and it was "this close" to being a really, really great read. I felt the story lacked depth. I needed more details for the characters, better descriptions of the house, scenery, etc. I did not find this a 'horror' story in the least. I had no problems falling asleep after reading. In my honest opinion, the story didn't get good until more than half-way through. If I wasn't the type of person that does not give up on a book, this one wouldn't have made it all the way through.

In the beginning of Creative Spirit, we are introduced to the history of Korban Manor...and to the domineering owner of the house and grounds.

Then we are thrust into the future as several artists gather to the present-day manor, kept in its historic condition as directed by Korban's will.

As the artists converge on the manor for their retreat, we catch a glimpse of what each of them hopes to achieve in this six-week stay at the old estate. Mason hopes to sculpture something noteworthy, to set his career on an upward path and to make his mother proud; Spence is hoping to jumpstart his languishing writing career; and Roth hopes to capture wonderful photos for a documentary.

Others are also there for similar reasons. But lurking in the background and ever-present throughout the story are others whose presence seems nebulous, questionable, and surreal.

And let's not forget Anna, terminally ill, and in search of a spiritual connection.

At first, I could connect with the characters and even the spiritual entities, feeling empathy for each. But as events progressed, and as the twisted plot left my heart pounding with fear, I had to set it aside...just so I could sleep!

When I finished it the next morning, I was quite glad for it to be over. Nicholson is a talented writer and his characterizations felt real and three-dimensional, even the ghosts. But I knew going in, and nothing has changed my mind: this kind of horror tale is not my cup of tea. Nevertheless, I'm awarding four stars for the way the author pulled it all together, and kept me guessing until the end.
