Editorial Reviews

Review

"It is a well-known truism that it takes a deep commitment to change; it takes an even deeper commitment to grow. In this brilliant and evocative book, the author makes the stunning if surprising case for creative stress as a major force behind growth and transformation. As readers we experience a mythic turnabout as we are lured into a state of being larger than our sorrows and more complex and satisfying than all our dreams. Truly, a wildly original and critically important work for our time and the unique challenges we face." ---Jean Houston, Author, A Mythic Life -- Jean Houston, Author, A Mythic Life

"James O'Dea has a uniquely kind and peaceful presence, and now he shares how we can find that for ourselves. This book delivers the medicine for our times."

-Marianne Williamson, Author, A Return to Love and The Age of Miracles --Marianne Williamson, Author, A Return to Love and The Age of Miracles

"James is a companion who guides us through the most difficult challenges as the actual energy to help us realize our ever emergent potential. A great gift."

-Barbara Marx Hubbard, Author, Conscious Evolution --Dr. Barbara Marx Hubbard, Founder, Foundation for Conscious Evolution

Format: Paperback
In his new book "Creative Stress: A Path for Evolving Souls Living through Personal and Planetary Upheaval", James O'Dea has created a path to the deep force behind the symptoms of personal and collective chaos. He shows how to "shake hands" with and even "embrace" the force of stress in a way that can transform both our individual lives and our planet. He states, "...the antidote to negative stress is not relaxation but an inner peace that comes from being aligned with your core being." This is not a recipe book for sissies, but for those willing to embrace and engage with its message it offers the realization of personal and planetary freedom and creativity.

This is not a book for speed-readers. Rich, dense, challenging, deeply inspiring, it has taken me two months to finish. And I'm sure I'll come back to it again and again, discovering things I missed before.

One of the most remarkable things about this book is that it invites us into a non-judgmental, compassionate, humorous, yet unflinchingly honest encounter with what Jung calls the Shadow (though James O'Dea does not use that term)--- and does this in a way that is energizing and encouraging. It is remarkably free of any doctrine, yet its spirituality is as profound as any from the great spiritual traditions.

For those of us who have experienced --- overtly or covertly --- deep depression about the appalling state of human society and what we are doing to our biosphere, this book is a cure. It gives us powerful tools and insights that enliven us, taking strength and vitality back from those very areas we hesitate to encounter (or turn a blind eye to), and living fully and authentically.

I also recommend his website [...] where you can scroll down and listen to the audio called "Invocation to humanity". A former director of the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) and also of Amnesty International, this is a man who walks his talk.

It is no easy accomplishment to be inspiring when fully grappling with the dire conditions currently plaguing the world; be that genocide, greed, economic meltdown or ecological collapse. This book is a MUST READ for anyone who wants to be able to be fully alive rather than numbing out with overwhelm. Both practical and visionary, Creative Stress is destined to make a great contribution toward healing the future.

Let's begin with I really do recommend this book. When you don't feel like reading it is precisely when you need to read it - if you get my drift. My first reaction was "Yeah, yeah, I've heard it before..." - but of course I hadn't, in the way Mr. O'Dea lays it out. Insightful, spot-on, and it was fun watching a part of my mind dragging its mental feet and finding all kinds of things to do other than read the book. Can you tell I'm not a huge fan of stress? Had enough of it to be a tad wary?

Well, fan or not, we all have stress - usually mega-stress. And this book shows you how to use that energy to power better things. Instead of stewing in your own swill, you can actually create something useful with all that stress - and learn a lot about yourself and what's going on at the same time.

Check it out. You won't be sorry.

Yes, we are living in interesting times. At a point in our evolution where the person who shouts loudest believes s/he will be heard best, James O'Dea calls for a calm, cool, collected practice of the sublime art of dialogue and improvement. This is not a book about stress avoidance schemes or relaxation techniques-- rather it is an open invitation to engage in meaningful ways. Much like the transformative practice of Tai Chi, which uses one's opponent's energy to redirect the center, Creative Stress offers an approach to being that transcends the stoic or indifferent position and offers a transformational alternative to "run and hide", disaffection or apathy. I was under a lot of personal stress at the point I first picked up this book. Some of the lessons I have learned have helped me greatly through my process of weeding through the clutter in my life and have brought new perspective and renewed commitment to the continuation of my undertakings. This book is a perfect lodestone for initiating conversations about the inner transformations that must occur in us before change and healing in the world can begin. I would very much like to gather a book discussion group together to see what other readings we will get out of this deep well.

Even though I have read only the first chapter of this book, I feel compelled to comment because I have met and heard James Odea lecture and have been moved to the core of my being by his experiences and how he has navigated his life. His authenticity is so powerful, I would recommend this book to everyone searching for help living in a real and meaningful way.
